hey guys, i got a free rifle yesterday from my brother its a vz24 8mm mauser,i think its $99 dollar special from big 5 .I don't want to see an old gun die this way so I'm going to redo the stock and clean it up.is their any other cool things i can do with this gun or are they worthless?its in really good shape for what it is....thanks.....spike

Actually that is a great short to middle range deer/bear/elk rifle.  I probably wouldn't consider it for shooting much more than 250yards, due to poor trajectory, but it's a great gun with fairly low recoil.  Many of those guns have been sporterized and used to roam the deer woods, and many still do.  I know all of my uncles started hunting with sporterized version of the 7 & 8mm military Mausers.  I killed my first deer/bear with a 7x57, what you most likely have is a 8x57, which is just the 8mm version.

sweet i will have to look for different mods i can do to it and maybe make a deer rifle out of it....and maybe give it to someone who need a first deer rifle...

be sure to check the headspace on it.. some of the 8mm's are a little loose or eroded...why not rebarrel it?... but then again, i like unbutchered service rifles
