Title: Elk Bow Hunters out West?
Post by: PA BEN on August 08, 2010, 01:59:52 PM
I'm a bow hunter who moved to the wet side 5 years ago. I don't have the time to bow hunt for elk so I picked up the rifle because the kids use them. I drew a rifle elk tag for 607, 602 and 612, Sept. 20th through the 24th. Once your season ends mine opens for a week. If any of you could give me any info it would be great. You have the first crack at it, so any info on area's w/good bulls would be nice. Thanks

Going out scouting today, the thing is there is no late archery elk in 602 and 607 so any info on elk you guys see would be great. You can PM me and keep your info out of the open, Archery ends the 19th, mine opens the 20th, so PMs during open season would be great. Thanks

Not yet. Went for a bike ride yesterday w/ the wife. 84 degrees :bash: Right now I'm heading into area's along the Park line. A few tracks, it's so hot out there holding up in the timber until late in the evening.

I'm sure the elk are in a different routine right now with the hot weather. It will surely change once the rut starts and the archers start and the weather cools down a bit and we see some rain. I'd get up there just before the permit season starts and find fresh sign. And of course, listen for bugles!

Not to bust any balls here, but the reason I posted on the bow hunting forum about elk is because you guys are out just before my hunt. I'm looking for info on elk in unit 602,607 and 612. I know how to hunt elk, I bow hunted them for 20 years. I know how to listen for bugles and to call, rake trees you name it. I'm not looking for a free ride here, I don't know the area's out West that will. That's way I'm out now. I know the elk will be doing different things in the rut, right know I'm learning the area, roads and unit boundary's. If I see or find elk now that would be great, but knowing your area will help you on a hunt when the elk are on the move. I'm marking spots on my GPS then moving to a different area and marking spots. If I push elk to a way point I have marked, I know there is a road over there, or if I hear a bugle on the next Mt. over, I might have a way point marked over there that I can drive to. Like I said not looking for a free ride but any info from you elk bow hunters would be nice.
Thanks

That's why I said PM's would be nice. No info on the forum. My season opens the day after bow season closes. From Friday the 17th I will be gone camping trying to find elk to get on the 20th. Bow season closes the 19th, I won't be around to look at posts or PMs.
Thanks PA BEN

Just thinking out loud here but, if you help an archer bag an elk, you might get some info as well as seeing the elk first hand.  Would that work?

Right now w/ my scouting I'm trying to figure out my area's. Only seen one cow cross the road in front of me at dark. Just a few tracks so far. This weekend I'm going to check out some other area's. I'd love to split gas money w/somebody for scouting.

i would get in touch with anyone planning on bow hunting that area, then offer your assistance with there hunt. i assume you live in that area. you can never have to many strong backs when an elk is down. maybe tag along with them during there hunt. maybe call for them. then switch roles when its your turn to hunt. just because i fill a tag doesnt mean i wana be down hunting for the year. i love just being out there and seeing my friends get the job done.

Hate to tell you this but I think you are going to have to get out and find your own big bull.
People around here that know anything about the area and the herds are not going to be to willing to give up their information.
I know where there are two nice bulls and several smaller ones. I've been scouting for three months now and myself like a lot of other folks are not going to give up their spots.
I helped someone out several years ago and it cost me one of my hard earned spots.
So my advice to you is to get out there and get after it.

Good luck

John

I hear Ya. I am scouting now, trying to learn the area's out west. I'm use to Rockey mt. elk, mostly open country hunting compared to over here. It doesn't hurt to ask. ;) I moved here 5 years ago from Chewelah and don't hunt elk w/anybody, just me, myself and I, and yes I know what it's like to get screwed by someone who you helped out on hunting spots. I know the Chewelah area like the back of my hand, you have to be careful who you give info to. All my hunting buddy's are scared about me giving coasties info on hunting on the east side. I don't want a free ride and I don't except anyone to give up a honey hole. I'd go w/a guide w/this tag but don't have that kind of money. If someone hooks me up with a nice bull, I will take them turkey hunting next spring around Chewelah.

I'm getting after it. Seen 11 legal bulls. 4 and 5 points, nothing worthy of this tag, at least the first few days. The rut is starting to kick in good, so I hope that big bull I haven't seen will be willing to play.
