Title: hunting socks
Post by: vandeman17 on August 09, 2010, 09:49:25 AM: I was wondering what kind of socks you guys wear or would recommend for an early season hunt? I have plenty of cold weather socks but I was wondering what you guys wear when its warm outside? I don't really want to wear just my regular athletic cotton socks but will if you guys think it is my best bet. My old man and I are going to a few different stores this weekend to load up on gear so any help in appreciated.

Smart wool and some others make lightweight wool socks (seems weird but they work well) that are good for early season. I usually wear thin silk (or something similar) liners and the lightweight socks and, if I sit to eat a sandwich and glass late morning after I've walked quite aways, I take off my boots and outer socks and let them dry out as much as possible - it usually only takes a few minutes. Unless it's raining, of course, but I hunt the east side and that's rare in Sept.

Yeah, I have the Fox River socks and they're good.

I'm a firm believer in the mid-day sock change. Smart wool is my favorite.

Sex-wise, rasbo, I think maybe you need to work on your technique ...

Merino wool is the best material but are not all created equal. Check the label for a high percentage of merino wool. 60-85% is pretty good.
Danner used to have the very best wool light hiker that I would gladly pay three times the price if available. I spoke with the danner rep and he said they had a falling out with the maker. He also asked if I would consider selling my two new remaining pairs .
Rocky used to have the best most comfortable heavy merino wool. I'm hoarding a few pairs.
Now it boils down to Smartwool medium weight hikers. Good wool ratio, comfortable, stay up, Reduce any odors, wick, easy clean. They remain soft for a good time and wear quite well.

I do have a few pairs of the smart wool cold weather socks that I really like so maybe I can find some warm weather ones. As for changing them mid-day, that is a great idea!

Post by: MuleySniper on August 09, 2010, 12:47:25 PM: I love wearing Smart Wools with a synthetic liner over them. My feet stay comfy and warm, not hot in my boots all day. Typically at the end of the day I'll just take the liners off and hang them up if they are damp then put em back on the next morning.

Post by: HUNT on August 09, 2010, 10:14:26 PM: Go for the smartwool socks in a heavier weight for hunting. My feet won't sweat and no blisters. By far the best socks I have ever owned. Schnees usually has a good sale on them this time of year.

Wholesale Sports right now has a deal wear you buy 3 pairs of socks you get the 4th pair free (not sure if this is all of thier stores, but this was the case tonight at the Burlington store). I picked me up some more Smart Wool.
