Title: Coyote Hunting This weekend- Met my goal to be able to climb a barbed wire fence
Post by: ivarhusa on August 14, 2010, 03:29:28 PM
Some of you have read that I took a health hit last year (pancreatitis) and missed last winter's coyote hunting. I came home in January using a walker, as skinny as could possibly be. I set my goal to be able to climb a barbed wire fence by first frost, and handily met that goal by mounting several fences FRI/SAT as I hunted coyotes.

Some lessons learned: Don't just recharge 8 batteries for the e-caller and forget to charge the two in the remote. Then, don't forget to turn the e-caller off, draining the batteries for the next day's hunt (with fresh batteries in the remote).  Funny about that.

I visited my honey-hole with great expectations. Today was my first visit to that location (a cattle CAFO) where I didn't see a single coyote. Saw one set of tracks, but nothing came to the call.

I visited other familiar shrub-steppe sites to be surprised by the changes.  At two locations, ranchers had cleared the sage off the hillsides, I presume to benefit grasses that can be grazed upon. Found a new cattle CAFO (concentrated animal feed operation)  that might become a coyote magnet.  There is FFTH land to hunt within a mile, so I am encouraged.

Wish I had coyote pictures to share. I had the camera, but only "shot a horse".

I am happy with my recovery so far.  I really am, but on October 29th I have rotator-cuff surgery scheduled. It carries with it a pretty significant recuperation time where one does not lift much of anything with that arm.  With luck, I'll be out there in January or February, climbing over barbed-wire fences again.  We'll see. Hey, I'm happy to be alive!

Glad you are feeling well. I wouldn't be climbing a barb wire fence. Land owners hate people to climb fences. It stretches fence and pulls out staples. Go carefully between the wires with out stretching.

Good point about going "through", rather than "over".  I am a bit thinner, now, so that becomes a possibility.  I was thinking about making a pair of "forked sticks" (both ends) that I could spread the wires out a bit, as I swing my ass through. Anybody tried that?

(I don't want to tear into my new-ish M2D camo jacket.)

I remeber seeing a setep for crossing fences that locks onto T post... smaller pocket sized step  fits in your pocket...Anyone else seen one?

I'm new to hunting, but would love to go coyote hunting if you want some company.  I'm in Richland also.
