Title: Subsonic .22 for grouse?
Post by: Marcoramius on August 17, 2010, 06:21:34 PM
I picked up a couple of boxes of subsonic .22 rounds (36 grain bullet) thinking that I may as well take some grouse (if the opportunity presents itself) while I am scouting for deer & elk. Does anybody have any experience with this ammo? Is it significantly quieter than standard ammo? I have a little auto pistol and fully expect them to not cycle the action, but that is ok... Just looking to not scare everything off around me.

It’s great stuff and it cycles fine in my 10/22 & 22/45.  Much quieter than the sonic stuff and has plenty of punch.

subsonic makes more of a "twack" noise than a loud crack.  sort of like a cap gun.

I have used several diff kinds of subsonics by Aguila... I have found they are loud out of any pistol, and havn't cycled an auto or 10-22... I personally like thier 60 grain  sub sonic.. I use it on my over under savage 22lr 20 ga... it is a quiet as a pellet gun...
Ballistics Information:Muzzle Velocity: 950 fps Muzzle Energy: 120 ft lbs

On the midway USA site there are revies of people using 10-22 ok :dunno:

Thanks for all the info...I haven't been able to find any of the 60 grain subs locally, but have seen them in Cabelas, which is what got me thinking about them in the first place. I'll give these 39 grain ones a try both in my little auto pistol as well as my old school savage .22/.410 over under. Only a week and a half until grouse season :)

My favorite subsonic is the Remington 22lr. It will cycle a semi auto and though they are not the most quiet bullet, they work fantastic. I've killed coyotes, bobcats, rabbits, crows, etc. with them. The best price I know of is at cheaperthandirt.com.

i really like the cci standard velocity rounds in my rifle.  they're subsonic and very quiet.  i've got a few boxes of aguila subs but they're not quite as accurate.

The aguila aren't made to be accurate, there made to be quite/silent.

well, keep in mind that just about ALL .22 target ammo is subsonic.  no worries about the bullet going transonic and wobbling, throwing accuracy off that way.
