Title: TrailCam theft issues??
Post by: BlackRidge on August 18, 2010, 12:11:56 PM
Hey all,

I'll be picking up a few cams this weekend, and was curious if anyone here has had any of their trailcam's stolen, or if you buy the protective boxes to help prevent that.

Just trying to gauge whether or not its something I need to invest in/worry about

Thanks!

Better to be safe and get some. You would hate to come to where your trail cam WAS and there is nothing. Besides pretators love biting them. Go to ebay and get a couple. Some are pretty heavy duty and weigh a little but just pretend you are getting in shape to pack that buck out.

I have had one cam stolen and it was easily accessible.  I know of three other times that someone else has found one of my cams, either from a picture or them leaving a rock on a log in front of my cam.
I have had two cams removed from trees by bears and many cameras bumped by bears, elk, deer etc.  So I would say they are a great way to give you a little piece of mind when the cams are soaking  ;)

I had mine in a metal lock box and lag screwed into a stump, someone just pried it off and it was gone. This happened earlier this year. When I got to the stump, I could see the busted wood ripped loose from the stump. This camera was about 200 yards off of the road in the brush. I hope that whoever did this rots in hell. I also hope that they don't find my new one.

I have not had an issue with theft yet....(probably will now) but of my 7 cams only two have cases/cable/lock. I lock up the expensive ones ($200+) and the $50 - $100 cams are at the mercy of the location. I try to keep them away from the roads, but I would rather place a cheap one near a road and lose it than to lose a good one.

put a sticker on your cams, saying this camera is being used in a study, equiped with gps. removing this camera is a federal offense, or something along that. I had a buddy who had several cams stolen years ago, he put stickers on his and never lost another. Makes people think

Hmmm, not a bad idea!

also like the idea just building cases from utility-type boxes, got plenty of those lying around. Finally get to use them for something other than target practice..

I use an ammo can. I mount 2" u-bolts top and bottom and dremmel out the face to match the cam and simply use some soft foam to push the camera to the front of the lock box. I am going to take my cams out next week b4 archery season starts I can take some pics if you want. It took about 2 hours to build.

I have some boxes for the small Bushnell Trophy cams. I can send pics to anybody who wants one. Send me a PM and I will send price and pics.

That sucks. What brand and how long since your last check?

I had it out for about a 2 week soak.  I was really looking forward to seeing what it caught.

Sorry, I don't remember brand.  I bought it a month or so ago.   It wasn't cuddebak, Primos, or Bushnell, but was kind of in the next lower price range.

It surprises me how trusting people are with trail cams, we were up in ferry and have seen 3 cams on the roads!!! No locks, nothing. Not me, one was a cudde and the other a new Bushnell. I don't have the money to just leave cams like that.

Lock boxes will only keep the honest folks out. If they want it they will find a way to get it. Just put your cams far from any roads. On more than one occasion I have driven a dirt road at night and found a few trail cams. If you can see the flash from the road it kinda gives them away.

Wouldnt the sheer awesomeness of being next to the picture cause the cam to explode?...
