Title: grouping at 50-60 yrds
Post by: sirfunkeybut on August 18, 2010, 02:24:41 PM: i dont really think that i'll ever take a 50-60 yrd shot a fully live animal but maybe a follow up on a shot animal, but i was just wondering if like a 6-9 inch group is pretty good at that range?

I should clarify. The 9 inch group is what I was thinking about, and I was thinking about it relative to shooting at an animal. I think the group you shoot, when considering whether to shoot at animals, should be measured by the biggest, rather than the smallest. I've not shot an animal with my bow yet, but am fully aware that one's shooting usually gets worse rather than better when the excitement is going.

So one inch at ten yards, 2 at 20 yards, 3 at 30 yards and so forth on out to 6" group at 60 yards. The key is doing that every time, not 6" groups at 60 yards 2 out of 3 times and a 9" group the third time. So if your keeping it every time in that one inch for every ten yards sort of equation, then yes, thats darn fine shooting by anyone's standards.

BTW this is also the standard that Chuck Adams goes by with Brad heads and hunting. 6" groups evertime is good enough. Deer have 8-9" vitals and elk have 16" vitals. My Max range standard changes based on how far I can keep a six inch group. Usually from me in Tue early season its 60 yds in the late season its 40 yds.

60 yards is a pretty decent poke, don't shoot unless your first shot is consistently where you want it.

Post by: let.it.fly on August 20, 2010, 07:15:27 AM: for a follow up shot at 60 your fine. any follow up shot is a good shot. at 60 with five arrows most of the time all my fletchings are touching i might get a stray but usualy like 2-4 inches for me. i also shoot about 200 arrows a week. but like i said any follow up is a good shot.
