i figure get prepared now... never hunted elk before, but elk hunting has always interested me... any advice for a first timer? im going to be dusting off my savage 99 (sav 300) for deer, but should i save up for something with a little more knock down power for elk? (i think it spits out a 180gr around 2500fps) :dunno:

I think your sav300 will be just fine as long as your accurate with it.

That weapon is fine for elk, should not even be an issue.

rather than save up for some more juice use those funds to buy more practice ammo. agree with others, that's enough as long as you shoot straight. good luck and post pictures and story when done. :)

Biggest tip = Play the wind... Don't even start to think you can fool a bull, or cows nose

My family has used the model 99 savage 300 to drop moose and elk. Play the wind, and expect to have to hike a lot.

From what I hear moose although big kill fairly easy. Elk can be tough and in a competitive environment. I believe the .300 savage is enough but there should be a self imposed limit on the range. some people think if they can see it it is in range.

play the wind eh? thats what i though.... i was thinking the sav. 300 would work but ive heard from a few people who swear by nothing but 7mm mag, well,.... a$$holes and elbows i guess.... can anybody validate "get as high as you can"? i know im good to at least 75 yards with the 300 (all i have is a 1x dot reticle scope)... i figure that hunkering down and calling-once the herd is located, given the density of the forest that my range will be more than suffciant.... but then again, my knowledge of elk hunting is based off magazine articles and watching the pros nail them on tv (rocky mountains are alot different than the cascades) i really appreciate any input... im new to the entire hunting scene and am having to teach myself off of what wiser individuals say... im 21 and nobody in my familly hunts (what a crying shame...) so any advice is helpfull... all i know elk is awesome eats, and i have a gun and a set of camo...

I have my dads old model 99 300 Sav. He use to hunt elk with it all the time when I was a kid living in Colorado. And as far as I can remember we always had a full freezer. Just have to remember it is not a "Best of the West" long range shooter.

Leave the call at home if you are hunting modern firearm the elk will be done talking you will just attract a bunch of two legged critters decked out in blaze orange.

If you can locate a herd, great, now locate their escape route and plan to be there. rifle elk season will have plenty of people movong the woods. for get the call, by rifle season the elk have heard more hoochie mama's than Will Primo and will be wise to it. catch em on the move and try to cut em off
