Title: Whatcom County East Smith Road
Post by: SSG Brower on August 23, 2010, 09:48:16 PM
New update but old topic.  i saw the smith road buck agin two mornings ago when i got home off of night shifts and was coyote hunting.  he is traveling with his, what i would expect, buddy a smaller now three point buck.  both in velvet obviously, but the smith rd buck is a five by five again this year with a huge body on him.  time to get the trail camera out again.  i've been watching/seeing him for the last 4 years and have yet to find a chink in his armor.  he is very sporadic and doesn't frequent same areas.  i've only seen him in velvet and never during the season.  i have heard of him covering area from the Kinder Morgan pumping station to the North Belingham golf course.  let's keep the sightings coming.

You can't hunt a blacktail with range like that. God will give him up... Or not.

I suspect his territory would take him through the private land between Smith and the highway. There's a gas pipeline cut through the woods in much of that. But around that there's some really thick habitat. The draws that lead down NE of Noon road. He's got all kinds of places to hide. Even searching that for scrapes and rubs would take quite a while and a fair amount of trespassing. And its easy to stereotype many of the types that live on the south side of Smith from Noon east.. Tree huggers feeding their pet deer.

So you want everyone and their brothers to know where a stud buck is living?  :dunno:

Like Steve said. It is very, very hard to find public land to hunt in that area.  Given that, I would doubt if anyone is able to harvest him.

I've seen him, almost ran him along with 2 does over in my buddy's drive way on our way to go looking for deer.

accidently shot his younger friend (or one that was with him) once (with a paintball gun... I swear I thought it was my friend I was shooting at), I was left standing there wondering how my buddy was making it through that brush so quickly, then I saw the two deer jumping through his yard.

He hasn't been frequenting that property much over the last year, but my friend has me on speed dial incase him or another wanders through durring season.
