T/C offers these .451 bullets up in a .50 cal sabot combo. Anybody use these for elk? Turns out they are tack drivers in my gun (1:28" twist 24" Green Mountain LRH-barrelled Hawken), but looking at the Hornady site, the XTP MAG needs some velocity to expand properly (recommended no less than 1200 fps upon impact, if I recall correctly). Any reservations about using these for elk? I haven't chrono'd my pet setup (90g of Select RS) but wonder if I have the fps to get the job done at 100 yards... Hornady makes a non-MAG bullet in the same weight that doesn't show the lower end of the fps being so high.
Any thoughts on what my MV is with the 90g in the 24" barrel"? Any body use these on elk in the past? what was your experience with these 300 grainers?

they are the same bullets i load in my 454 casull they are a good bullet. if they shoot good then you should be o.k. but i tend to stick to muzzleloader bullets for hunting rather then a bullet designed for handguns and shot in a muzzle. just my :twocents:

Thanks Carp - I'm probably going to just chew these up in practice and use the t/c shockwaves in my gun for elk. Those shoot almost as well as the Mag XTP. May try Barnes, but have a hard time choking down $1.25 a round for the projectile...

i think that would be best. tc are a pretty solid bullet i would trust them and the barnes. the 1.25 is harder to swallow but its not very spendy if you look at the total money u spend hunting what 20-40 in bullets :chuckle: not very much gas for 40.00 :chuckle:

:bdid: Whoa, there, Carp - let's not start adding it up line by line... :chuckle: I did that once with walleye and found I would have been saving about $60/lb by just buying from Cabela's at $20/lb... but I still fish for 'em when I get the chance... so, maybe I do go with the Barnes. We'll have to see if they shoot well - only one way to find out ;)

:chuckle: kinda like me i have about 100 in fishing for steelhead/salmon this year and not got one yet :chuckle: that is spendy fish right there :chuckle: the barnes shoot very well threw all my guns i just bought another so we will see.

LOL, This year, I have spent almost $400 for salmon/steelhead fishing...and have not even gone salmon fishing yet. My new Loomis has just been sitting in the garage waiting to be played with :chuckle:.
Skillet, I shoot the Barns and they work very well out of my rifle. I am shooting very tight groups with them, but they are also very tight going down the bore.

I shot about 20 of those XTP Mags up this weekend. I actually also shot half a box of the 370 gr T/C Maxiballs this weekend - got my first three shot cloverleaf with them on iron sights at 100 yards. Good enough for any elk I will cross. Definitely enough bullet if I put it in the boiler room.
I do like cast bullets. Easier to load in a hurry than the sabots, IMHO.
