Title: Muzzy Ballistics
Post by: saread on August 24, 2010, 02:05:16 PM
Went to the range on Sunday to check the ballistics on my Bighorn.  Shooting 300 gr SST with 95 gr 777 in front of a musket cap.  Shot dead on at 100 yds, 4 in. high at 50 yds and 18 in low at 200 yds.  Seems like a lot of drop at between 100 and 200 yds.  I was expecting about a foot, but 18 inches seems like a bunch.  Thoughts?

seems normal to me - heavy chunk of material that is not exactly shaped for the best balistics in the world.....  I think mine is pretty similar. :dunno:

My thought would be how do you see the target well enough at 200 yards in order to get a good group? Are you using a scope? 100 yards is just about my limit with open sights.

Yep, they will really start dropping.......good reason to limit the range to less than 150 yards.

This might be interesting for you to look at:  http://www.prbullet.com/drop.htm (http://www.prbullet.com/drop.htm)

It's a test of 20 different bullets, all sighted in for 100 yards, and then shot at 200 yards to compare the drop. He was using 3F Triple 7, 100 grains. I assume you were using 2F? There was a Hornady SST bullet in the test but the 250 grain, not the 300 like you were using. So with more powder, a lighter bullet, and the higher velocity that goes with that, he got 11 inches of drop at 200 yards. So I'd say 18 inches with your combination is definitely right in line with that. The 20 bullets had a range from a low of 5 inches of drop up to 21 inches.

-That is the same gun, powder, bullet, dead on distance as mine!  :hello: I would like to be within 50 but I have practiced enough where if a bull is within 200 and I have a solid rest its dead! Im hittin a 10" plate everyshot at 200. Took some practice at paper 1st to do that though! Come on Elk season!! :)

Yup, ffG powder.

Using a Williams peep sight and a good bench for 200 yds.  Group is about 5", but I think if I work on the load I can do better.

I have no intentions of taking a 200 yd shot, I was just trying to get a sense of where it will shoot at various distances.  But, if I had to do it, I think it can be done.

Good to know it seems right.
