My elk hunting partner lives by Hancock properties and was up by a farmers field on south hill puyallup yesterday, he saw a 6 point polished out chasing around 15 cows and was bugling!!!!!! It's beginning my fellow elk nuts, it just got a little tougher to get to work.

I'll be out at my spot after work with my cow call trying to make contact. I'll have my 5 year old son with me so, I won't be trying that hard ;)

Double J. If you are new to this. do not try to learn, or practice near real elk. It educates them to what sounds are man made and teaches them to stay away or worse go the other way. Practice at home.

Yep. Til every Tom, Dick and Harry start educating them with thier best Sportsman Channel rendition. Then they will shut up and do thier thing in silence. :P
-
was up in the woods last Sunday and saw some guy standing on a clearcut blowing the living hell outta a bugle! :mor: Then they wonder why they cant get a bull to respond come mid September.

I'm using the cow call that I know how to use, not the one I'm trying to learn. Not going to blow on it all evening either. Just a couple of toots to see if there is anything around and to make the kid smile. If I hear them without calling for them, then I won't even call. Not trying to actually see them yet, just want to ensure they're there.

Good approach DJ, hope your boy has a BIG griin. :)
I understand the concerns expressed. I watched a truck in Idaho stop at each bend in the road, get out, close the door walk 20 yards , blow his bugle, then reverse. Makes you wonder where common sense was missed.

The guys I saw just stuck the bugle out the window of their SUV and blew!

DoubleJ, I do the same thing with my son. He loves to hear the elk talk and usually asks me what they are saying. Its a fun way to get him excited about being outdoors and putting that want to hunt in him at a young age.
They were bugling on the 14th in my area, ever since its been hard to work.

had a few bulls barking at me on sunday as they couldnt figure out what i was. (i wasnt calling). also heard them back off in the timber chirping at each other. 1 bull had 4 cows he was pushing with another smaller bull following them around. didnt hear any real bugles but they are starting to talk.

I'm in the same boat, but I'll be able to hear them bugling from where I'm working! ;)
I sure hope my buddy doesn't really want his cabin square because If there's bulls bugling around me, not much attention will be paid to the tape measure :chuckle:

Do you know if you will be fishing or hiking the weekend of the 11th? I hope o be over Friday and if not it will be early Saturday morning. I will help you pack in some of you camp stuff.
-
deer slayer, I probably won't know until friday the 10th. we have a walleye tourney and we're undecided if we'll do on the 11th & 12th or go up to the hills. I'll be up for 6 days next week so I'll get a hold of you after that.

I was watching a dandy 5 by 5 with absolute no velvet chasing a bunch of cows two nights ago. Been seeing trees getting whacked, whoooooooooooooeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, I can't keep the grin off my face with the countdown coming to an end. :archery_smiley:
