Title: Sleeping bag
Post by: sako223 on August 27, 2010, 09:23:03 PM: I used to just get a sleeping bag by the temp scale and just sweat or suffer.
Now I would like to get a fairly decent bag for cooler weather and need a pretty warm one. Not needing to backpack it. Almost seems like a wool one would be the answer as wool blankets are nice at home, just heavy.
With all the new fabrics and fillers have they really come up with anything better than mother nature yet, goose down and wool have worked well forever it seems.
Any way what do you have experience with and what makes it better?

Post by: rainshadow1 on August 27, 2010, 09:59:01 PM: I gotta get a summer bag. I have a good cold bag, very old, but lightweight synthetic fiber, and too hot for me 90% of the time. Just got a good mid temp bag from an Uncle, also old. Used it camping in the yard with the kids a couple weeks ago and sweated my butt off! Gotta get a liteweight! No idea what the latest technology is, I'm way out of the loop.

Been meaning to ask about the cougar sounds too. Just worried I might have problems getting them on the foxpro.

Post by: MikeWalking on August 27, 2010, 10:22:39 PM: Got a killer deal on my winter bag 15? years ago. Comfort rated to -5 and have slept warm and cozy when it was 15degrees in the tent with winds over 75mph. 650fill Down, Dryloft Shell. I may get buried in it.. :chuckle:

My summer Car camp only bag is a Kelty synthetic I won on 10cent pulltabs, rolls up the size of a keg, car camper only...

Bought and sold a few synthetic bags over the years, found most to be over rated for warmth. Most of what I was reading ten years back complained about short lifespans for Synthetic bags, maybe that's improved but they're still basicly plastics, sooner or later Plastic stops rebounding. On the other hand, somewhere around here I still have the Down bag my parents bought me in 1972 and if I were 4-5 inches shorter it would still be a good 15degree bag.

Kinda looking around my self, Love my winter bag but I'd like something extra roomy for the bed in the Jeep.

Easy to get the Cougar library on the FP, they're MP3's.

If you get a GOOD cold weather bag, you won't WANT to use it for anything else! When it comes to not packing it, the options are wide open. Most comfortable rig I've seen was a home brew with treated canvas, poly, wool, and flannel. Camp roll style, home made by a traditional muzzleloader kind of guy. Beautiful rig, and would have been fun to make. I sure wouldn't have wanted it on a pack frame though!!!
