Title: Hunting the Hunters- shot an osprey with my 270 on Saturday
Post by: ivarhusa on August 30, 2010, 09:46:04 PM
That is to say I took some pictures of an osprey with a 270mm lens on my camera.  The bird was about 100ft away, in this tree top, you see.

More to the point of this forum, I found a place I'll hunt coyotes with my camera. It is in a state park.  I'll bet some of you will recognize the location from the photo.  They run cattle on the land, and I spotted plenty of seed-filled scat that I figure must have been from a coyote, though the scat was a little larger than I am used to seeing. What a set up.  The most natural spot to call from (given the approach) suffers only when the prevailing wind is from the west- which it usually is.  I'll have fun with the challenge one day.

And here's another picture for good measure.  I had a good weekend.

You won't confuse my pictures with the pro's on this site, but I had fun taking them.  Them osprey babies woke me up Saturday morning with their pleas for "more fish".  I had to get up and "shoot 'em".

Growing up on the Skagit river, I got to watch Ospreys fish every day. They are truly amazing birds. They can hover, fold their wings, and dive. Hitting the water with a big splash. Then seeing it come up with fish is really amazing.

If there is a down side to this story (there isn't, really), it is that the pair from this nest crap all over my father-in-law's deck and sidewalk.  This tree is literally over his house.  How cool is that? (Turns out the crap is very resistant to scrubbing off with a hose.  He's looking into a power washer.)

Beacon Rock, Nice. My dad almost got ran over by a nice 3X3 BT down there on the south side of the road. Could've grabbed it with his hands I guess.

We have a winner!  Beacon Rock it is.  I knew one of you could come up with that.
