Title: Opening day strategy?
Post by: Recurve-Elk on August 31, 2010, 09:21:29 PM
Hey there guys, my dad and I were driving home from Canada today and getting each other all amped up for the opener.  We got to thinking about what we want to do opening morning, and can't really decide exactly our plan...

So my question to you guys is.  What are your plans for opening morning with the animals not being spooked and all?  You don't gotta give away your little secrets ;) we are just uncertain of what plan to go about with  :dunno:

Call? Stalk? Sit? Deep dark timber? feeding areas? wallows?  Bugle or not to bugle? So many questions are going through my mind right now!

I have been watching a few herds all spring and instead of going in trying to call them, I am going to go in and sit and wait for them to come to me.  They are still pretty patterned in my spot so hopefully they stay that way for another week.  If its slow there I might toot on a couple calls and see who comes in.  Good Luck

In my area they are bunching up and starting to bugle. I will just try to get close and cow call and see what happens with that and then maybe a bugle to see what happens if the cow call fails

Morning will be a little spot and stalk,  probably find a god spot they bhave been moving thru nand sit there for awhile.  Afternoon I'll be in my popup blind.... every yeart I have seen them heading there... this year I set up the ground blind and have plenty of trailcam pics of them.... bad thing is the past 2-3 weeks they have been in there morning, noon and night... hope with the dark moon they'll be more easy to pattern.

I like what I am reading so far.  More of a non aggressive approach is the general consensus, kind of what i expected.  Keep em' coming, I like learning as much as I can  :)

Sorry just realized this isn't in the elk hunting section.

I've stumbled into a nice honey hole this year that is showing plenty of sign.  My plan for the first few days is to sneak in there early and stay late laying in wait for the big bulls to follow the cows around through a couple of choke points.   This is an area that I know there is alot of activity moving through and I don't want to unnecessarily put too much pressure by trying to call and sneak around all over the place and just end up bumping the elk around.

Hopefully my game camera that I just put up will verify my suspicions on this place.
