I've had good performance from my 77.  I've also had ggod luck with the 700 and mauser, but the ruger has became my "go to" gun.  It never fails.

Frist choice: A-Bolt.  Short swing, tang safety, super strong lugs.  1 of the best for the $.

2nd choice: Rem 700.

Well I've had Winchesters, Remingtons,Mausers, but I'll take the Savage bolt actions any day.
One reason is I can change the barrels myself. No gunsmith required.
And they are accurate.

Remmy 700, Howa, and of course Savage/Stevens. But for a truly custom build a Lawton action trued with a nice custom barrel, I have one in the works now, but abit harder to resupply the "slush fund"with momma doing the books. Might have to start selling blood and plasma.........lol

i think that for a handmade personal custom rifle, that i want a short handsome medium range open sighted bolt action. scoped long range guns can get boreing since everyone has one and besides, a really beautifull iron sighted rifle would prolly have very great looks and balance . the things that i want in a custom rifle anyway.

Sako would be my first choice.  I like a "controlled" feed action, for the ease of loading and unloading.

Ruger 77 All Weather in 300 win mag.  Bought it the first year they made them I think '92, when they had the really ugly skeletonized stock, which makes it kick like a mutha!  But damn it just points nice and shoulders up nice, and ugly as it is it always shoots dead nuts, and it always comes through for me.

Someone told me those weatherby's had a problem with the bolt accidentally falling out? Is there any truth to that?

I've always preferred the smooth jewelled bolt of the Remington 700. Simple, strong, smooth, proven.

Remington 700 is the most commonly and easily customized action there is. Easily made very accurate. 8)

I love true controlled feed also, better for function than accuracy though. Some old Sakos are controlled feed the new ones say they are, but they aint. :)

No 3 lug or rotating head action should be allowed to enter. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Also no brands of guns that have no factory, and never have, should be allowed! :IBCOOL: :chuckle: :chuckle:

the old stand by Model 700 is the mark that all other gun makers try to meet. Always so smooth and never fails. I trust my life with this action.

My pre 64 Mod 70 .308 is my favorite. It is very smooth, never any hang ups, very very little slop when fully open, and fairly quiet when chambering next round. I love it. Can'tsay the same for the late model 70's, sloppy and feel like *censored* for the most part. :dunno:

for building a CUSTOM rifle, i may change my mind from a 98 mauser to a 17 enfield.. this is a robust piece, with plenty of magazine space to chamber any damn thing you want, without getting a bigger action.  and its American, not Teutonic like the mauser..

my first bolt gun was a remington, and i like their rifles,, but for a CUSTOM rifle, i want a claw extractor and a blade ejector..  thought about a 03 springfield, but i dont like the two piece firing pin.

I have always used remington model 700 bolt action so I dont know anything different for the most as in use, but what do you guys think of the new rugers and their action with the 3 position safety I have been looking at them but dont know if i like it or not.

I have one with the three position safety and think that every gun should have one. I know that everyone always keeps their gun in a safe position at all times but we all know that accidents can happen. Just one less thing to go wrong.

I wouldn't want a rifle with a three position safety. Not that there's anything wrong with it, I just am not used to a safety like that, and I don't see the advantage to it.

Remington 700 for the same as above, but one of my main rifles is a mauser action.

I really like the 3-position safety (safebolt) system on my Steyr.  I also really like a safety on the tang.  It is much faster for me to take it off safety than my Win mod 70.

The 3-position safety is a little safer since it can't fire when you are unloading the rifle.

I voted M70, but I could live with any of the choices; (I don't think any of them have the safety on the tang, do they?).  If I were going with a custom rifle I would go with any of your choices that the smith you plan on useing recommends.  If he likes a particular one best, go with that one.

I voted 700 rem.  Mines in .270w.  I love this action, not silky smooth but trusty. Never had it freeze in fowl weather, never had it fall open.

Ruger 77 is also at the top of my list.  Hunted in Montana with a .243 m77 Hawkeye.  I like the safety, can have it on walking or shooting stages

Good friend of mine has a Weatherby 7mm rem mag. Not the Vanguard but a step up from that.  We were hunting in the 448 last year and had to turn around and hike 2.5 miles backtrack to retrieve his bolt.  It cycles smooth as silk, to smooth I think, almost feels loose.

Im with Curly on the three position safety.  Like the middle setting or "walking safety"

Speaking of 3-position safeties, the new Browning X-bolt is supposed to have a 3 position tang safety according to the article I read in American Rifleman.  Sounds very similar to the safety on my Steyr.

The X-bolt sounds like a decent rifle........have any of you guys seen one yet?

I like the Weatherby mark V actions and the Remington 700.  The new Remington actions with the child locks suck I will never buy one of those.

Not a big fan of 3 pos safety.  Really like the 2 pos tang on my A-Bolt.  I've only seen photos of the x-bolt.  Personally I think it's on the ugly side.  I'm not a big fan of that modern look... kinda like the Cynergy O/U.

Holy crap, I've officially turned into a grummy old man.... I don't like anything that's different than what it used to be.  And by the way.... the world's going to hell in a hand basket, now get out of my yard :)

I got a 700 in .243 with the child lock on the bolt and there *censored*. Good gun love the rem700 own 3 of them, but will never again buy one with that lock, more to go wrong and if you lock it and forget the key screwed. I never use the lock, just a good ole cable lock. I've shot rem, winys, savage and rugers and I favor the rems 700.
