Title: Stuck choke
Post by: Fishnclifff on September 11, 2010, 09:02:27 PM
Okay I thot everything was lubed and hunky dory after last duck season.
Just got the new choke for the Escort and wa-la  the other choke is froze in the barrel.
All during the season I could unscrew the thing with a easy twist of the tool. Now . stuck solid.
I sprayed some PB Blaster down the barrel upside down , with a cloth in it, soaked the cloth, still nuthin.
Help

Depending on the finish type I would use a torch and try and get the barrel up to about 500f and try the choke tool again. Just make sure you heat the barrel and not the choke as it's the barrel you want to expand.

Kroil oil. An amazing oil which is molecularly (sp?) smaller than many other oils and will penetrate to loosen when other stuff doesn't. Tacoma Screw sells it....

Yeppers....Kroil and if that don't work, heat, and if that don't work-plant it in the garden and use it as a 'mater stake.  :chuckle:

Heat and light tapping with a rawhide mallet, anything harder will damage the barrel. Next time put a bit of anti-seize on the threads, or some kind of gun grease, just don't use much.

what are you using for a wrench? in the future, remove the tubes in the off season.

Well here is the dumb part. I used anti-sieze all year while hunting. Cleaned everything, and reapplied the anti-sieze.
 :dunno:

Let me know what works..I bought a Remington Mod. 870 from a thirsty Friend at work and the choke is stuck in it..He hunted ducks with it, and used it out in saltwater.. :yike: It took some work to clean it up..

Light tapping with Kroil, or Rust Buster. It'll go, just be patient and don't hit it too hard. The vibration seems to loosen stuff up a bit, keep constant pressure against it with the choke wrench, just not too much that will damage the wrench or the choke.

Remember to do all this with the barrel off the gun, don't want all them chemicals gumming up the works by collecting dust in the action over time.

Good Luck, tell us how it worked out.

Choke tube freed up and removed safely. :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:
Sprayed the Kroils in there, let er soak, a little tappy tap tap, okay a lot, long 3/8 ratchet in the speed handle for leverage and out she came.
I did modify my speed handle. i ground off 2 of the tits on it so it fit in flush. That seemed to help the whole feel of everything.
Thanx for all the help and advice.
