Title: Macro photography
Post by: popeshawnpaul on March 18, 2008, 12:42:11 PM
It's that time of year where the deer have dropped their horns, there's too much snow for the mountains, it isn't quite fishing season, and the rams are tired from breeding.  One thing I always try and do when I get some free time is to shoot macro.  You got some?

I've never really fully understood what "Macro" means. What qualifies?

Macro photography is close up photography.  Some lenses do it better than others.  I shot the above dragonfly with my 200mm f2.8L lens which isn't called a macro lens but it is very good at it.  What makes a good macro lens is a focal length of 50-200mm and a close focusing distance.  Check the specifications on your lenses and you may find that you have a really good macro lens.  Lens speed isn't factor in macro much since you are often stopping down to f5.6 or more to get the whole insect in focus.  Many cheap zoom lenses are really good macro lenses.  In addition, cheap kit lenses are actually good quality when stopped down to f8-f16.  So it really doesn't take any money to get into macro photography.  Many say you must have a flash, but I disagree.  I have never used a flash with macro photography and have sold a few images.  Try this out...take your kit lens and set it to manual focus to the closest setting it has.  then hold it up to your finger and see how close you can get to your finger before it turns blurry.  If your finger was an insect then you know how large it will look in the viewfinder.  A tripod is necessary.  I find on many of my large big game trips that there is a lot of down time.  Most people stand around and think there is nothing to shoot.  There are tons of macro shots if you look around your feet...

Nice pics Jack, got one of the little guy hibernating and one that looks a bit like the kids looking for a meal.  Very cute kid. Mine were once that size but know they have morphed into absolute demon spawn. Sometimes I think one of my kids is "chucky".. But again cute pics.

Keep them coming. Great shots everyone.  I was going to do a bunch with flies I have tied, but haven't quite got there yet.   Hornseeker did an awesome one with a fish once, looks like an abstract painting.  I'll have to see if I can get him to get it on here.

Here's one. I LOVE macro photography and want to do some art with it someday. I have lots of ideas. Fish skin is a big one for me, being a fish bio, another, is antler... but one of my favorite ideas is to do macros, really nice ones, of the different caddis fly "shells" or houses if you will. Some make them out of pine needles, others out of tiny little sticks, others with pebbles, some little sand size pebbles, others with pebbles the size of themselves... my favorites are the ones that build tiny, tubular square houses with tiny, TINY sticks... unreal.

Well Doug...thats all I had, was this tiny one...you got a bigger version?

I tried a bit with the birds last night with that lens I got from you Pope.  Sure not as clear as canon glass is it.
Title: Re: Macro photography
Post by: popeshawnpaul on March 20, 2008, 09:53:24 AM
Well, it's as good as Canon glass, but not as good as L glass.  Actually, that lens is rated very highly in its class and is rated better optically than the Sigma 400mm f5.6.  The Sigma has better autofocus though.  I've sold a lot of images taken with that lens.  I found that stopping down to f6.7 or f8 makes that lens super sharp.  It's not a macro lens though...it doesn't focus close enough.
Title: Re: Macro photography
Post by: boneaddict on March 20, 2008, 10:08:13 AM
It wasn't true macro for sure.  I was pushing it right at its range.  I was working with a dancing bird working 4 hens and I was having trouble trying to shoot it fast enough or focus fast enough beofre he moved on.  The sigma 400 5.6 works as a good macro lens.  I took alot of flower pictures with the ole A2E film.  That was fun.  Maybe some of my clarity came from focusing on the bird before he moved.  I was in AV and shooting one stop down or 6.7 I think.  The pic itself was fine, but when seeing actual size I lost the sharpness you should ahve in feathers.  I was also shooting offhand.

Post by: popeshawnpaul on March 20, 2008, 10:52:30 AM
It's really hard to shoot that lens handheld.  Tripod is a must.  You can pick up some cheap extension tubes for it and bring the focus distance in considerably.

I love these threads...keep 'em up!

I've wanted to post a few times in the past, but held back beacuse I'm using CHEAP equipment and am a complete amateur--never had ANY instruction, read any books, etc....just kinda doin' it my own way. A little bashful, I guess...

Anyway, here's a few I found that have been taken in the last year or so....using a cheap Kodak Z700 autofocus, 4mp, 5x zoom.
IIRC, none of these pictures used a tripod...just the 2-second delay so I didn't get any blur from pressing the button. This camera also has NO image stabilization.
I'm sure I tweaked some settings, but can't recall just what was changed.

If that last shot was handheld that's really difficult to do.  Nice macro work.  You really don't need much money to do it right.

IIRC, the camera was $119 on closeout about 2 years ago.
The top four were handheld, no rest.
The last picture (cascade) I was laying over a large rock, elbows rested. Again, I use the 2 second delay for I don't blur the photo by moving as I press the button.

Hey Bone are the bird ones taken from birds in your coop mostly? If so do you raise them for release?
Title: Re: Macro photography
Post by: boneaddict on March 26, 2008, 10:50:23 AM
I raise 99% exotic, and most are for sale or egg production, and or pets.  Almost 100% of my stock is for sale purpose.  On occasion one escapes and becomes a pet or coyote bait.  Most are recaptured, some are not.  If its an expensive one, I obviously try harder than on others.  Most of my Ringneck and chukar shots come from "wild" birds from around our home.  We have enough feed and cover and safetyu areas that they like to visit.   We do have a couple as pets from Big R, that also help attract some of the locals with their calls, and we keep them for that enjoyment.

I have been testing out an old manual focus Canon FL 55mm f1.2 lens lately.  Yea...f1.2.  Super fast.  This type of a lens costs 1.5k or so these days but this one was given to me by my father.  You can get fast old lenses like this on ebay.  For doing portraits and abstract macro work, they are amazing.  The bokeh is unbelievable.

Post by: popeshawnpaul on June 22, 2008, 07:28:00 PM
Yeah.  I'm still trying to figure out how to connect it to my camera.  For now I hold it up to the opening and focus by moving closer or farther from the subject.  I have an adapter coming that will hopefully allow focus confirmation.  I'll have to machine it to fit the lens but it should be a fun project.

How the hell do you do a portrait with it, the tip of the nose would be in focus but the eyes and rest of face wouldn't. ;)
Title: Re: Macro photography
Post by: popeshawnpaul on June 22, 2008, 07:42:53 PM
Exactly.  That's why the 85mm f1.2 L is one of the best portrait/wedding lenses ever.  Soft focus and shallow depth of field is perfect for portraits.

I'd like it for some of my birds I think.  The tame ones in the pen so I can wash outthe background of the pens but be right up on the bird.   :dunno: might be too soft though for that.
