I was just surfing some old pictures.... this was last September in SW MT...heading 6 miles into camp... camp is below the far ridge in the background....

Better explained, camp is actually located just off the left of that tip lid on the green pack, where the tree stand bars appear to come out of the pack! Those mountains were all white when we left 5 days later!! (with no bull)
-
By the way, those stands went up overlooking this trail...

And this is looking from a dry waterhole(never seen it dry before that day) across a meadow to the treestand...

what range is that? close to the pintler"s?? im like you, i sure do love the montana high country.. it may not be as high as co or ut or other mountain states,, but the montana rockies sure are rugged..
-
Just south of the Pints...
-
our outfit hunts in the bitteroots, by sula off of 93.. would like to go see the pintlers soon. pretty pretty pretty
-
What part of the valley do you elk hunt Mountainwalker? I have hunted the southern bitterroot for 9 years. Killed a few bulls in there the last 6. This was up the W. Fork last fall...

So is that one of the places I am going this fall? ;)
-
we hunt the southern roots... east fork root,,, warm springs creek ... unit 250....you can turn off 93,, right in from of the sula rangers office... drive 8 miles up the dirt road.. then your at andrews creek trailhead... or you can go up by crazy creek or up the 177. right across from unit 270.. an awesome awesome mule deer unit.. i was lucky enough to guide a man who had a 270 tag... did not get a buck.. but seen some very nice deer.. he was after only non typ... passed a 150 bc buck for sure..
-
Horn,
I guess I've never given this much thought, being in WA and all, but can you hunt the archery season and then the rifle season if not successful in archery with the general combo tag? I love that area, hunted a couple times east of Wisdom. Rifle only though.
-
yes, u sure can..
-
You can... I give it maybe 5 years though. THe hunting pressure is getting crazy, plus now that compound guys can shoot over 100 yards accurrately, bowhunting isn't what it once was.. time will tell.
Mountainman, I used to work for Chris O'Brien, of Lightning Creek Outfitters, he used to run that whole Warm Springs, Maynard, Porcupine, Sheepshead country. Do you know if he's still in there?? This fall I drove by the Warm Springs campground and there were about 5 guys sitting on the ground and about 12 mules and horses packed up ready to go... it was the Saturday before opening... did you go in on that deal?
Great country...thats for sure.
Doug, yeah...good chance if you draw we will hit that country behind me and Chris there. My love handles wont be as prominent this fall though (heck, they aren't that prominent right now!)

Sounds like a deal. I've got about 50 pounds to drop realistically before then. That would be one hell of an incentive.
-
YESSIR! that is our area. joe ferraro bought it from o'brien.. yeah,, camp at sheep's head...with the spring down the hill...bottom of the meadow...porcupine,, prayer, praine,, lightneing creek, fire creek
small world eh?.. we have hunted on the same grounds.. cool :)
-
Yep...cool country man...
Doug, you've seen this before, but just a sampling of what can be had up in that country...

That guy on the left will do fine.....
-
I ran into an outfitter a few times in that area a very long time ago, seemed like a really good guy. He gave us some very useful pointers. I think his last name was McNeil. Diamond something or other outfitters I think the name was. Anybody know if he's still around that area?
-
the name does not ring a bell....our main comp are the thunderbow outfit... they day use all over the bitteroot.. buncha *censored*ty guys if you ask me......
-
Yes, a sharp stick into that would be fun as heck. Then the work begins. I was wondering if that was the same country. We'll know here in less than a month.
-
bone,, what unit you hunting in mt?
-
Wherever my guide (hornseeker) points.
-
thats neat.......wonder if you guys might be swinging my way this fall. he said he used to cook for an outfit where i guide now.. it was so neat to see a complete stranger know exactly where you are talking about.. good luck man!!

Thanks, I understand what you are saying, as I am alot like that in Washington. People probably think I pry when I ask as many do pry. I have enough hunting spots that I'll never hunt them all. I relaly don't need any more. I get some satisfaction or thrill out of knowing that I have stood in that spot or have seen deer right there as well etc. I obviously get around here in this fair state. To top it off, Ihave a near photogrpahic memory, so when people post pics and I'm like ya stood there 5 years ago... its kind of weird. I've never hunted in Montana, so really looking forward to seeing some fresh ground. I understand there is alot of it over there. ;)

Did anyone else notice on this year's MT application that they no longer had the box to check for receiving leftover permits? How are the leftover tags going to be doled out this year?
-
I did notice.
-
i never did notice, but then again my boss is buying me a outfitter tag.
-
I saw that.Ive never had a problem getting drawn but my brother gets a left-over almost every year.Maybe not this year.
