Title: Bugles??
Post by: actionshooter on September 16, 2010, 08:07:44 PM
For the guys who are using bugles for elk hunting, which ones are the best? Which calls are the ones to stay away from. I've got a whole year to practice.  :chuckle:

I can't use a diaphram so, I went with the Bugling Bull Select "A" Bull call.  I tried the Primos pack bugle and hated the sound.  Then tried the Terminator and hated the sound.  Went with the Select "A" Bull and LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!  If I was to do it again, I would probably buy the Bugling Bull Pack "A" Bull for $20 instead of the one I got for $50.  You're supposed to be able to make 3 different bull bugles with the one I got but, I can't tell the difference in sounds.  Not worth the extra $30

everyone should get a terminator......then I could separate the real bugles from the hunters...they have a very distinct sound.......

JPPHELPS a sponsor on this site, his calls are great very diverse, best cow calls I have heard.  Good distance.  We called in several bulls this year with these calls, including a cow.  As far as Bugles I would work with a diaphram just because it is hands free, and you can cow call, and bugle without having to use your hands.  Funny thing I Dont even have one of JP's calls, noe do I even know the guy, my hunting partner this year used them and sold me.  Ill be getting a couple soon.  Good luck..  Practice on your wife and kids though not in the woods till you are confident, really confident. :twocents:

I use a diaphragm and i use a small tube that used to be a lip bugler. Real clean sound. Great grunts.

Has anyone tried this call?  I saw it at Walmart for $20.   :dunno:  Sounds alright in the video but I would like to hear from someone who has tried it.

:yeah:
I use an E.L.K. Power Bugle.  They seem to work much better than that Primos stuff that everyone and their brother blows.  I'ts put out by the Eastman boys.  I've seen screaming bulls shut down the second that a Terminator is blown and will light right back up with the Power Bugle.  When I first got one we tested it out at the edge of the park at St. Helens and was able to pull bulls from a long distance with the P.B. but they turned away from the Terminator.  Both blown the same way.

BIL has that call and I absolutely HATE it. Maybe I'm an idiot, but when I have messed with that thing it sounds NOTHING like what it sounds like on the video. One it is really quite and doesn't project well, and Two, it doesn't sound authentic. Just my  :twocents:

When you guys are talking about the terminator, I use the terminator baffle tube, but use a mouth reed into it. Are you talking about the true terminator with the blue reeds, or just that tube in general?

Elknut's Buglesr are nice. Pretty compact and light weight. I have called in quite a few bulls with mine  ;) ;) I use custom reeds also  ;)

JPhelps, I need one of your calls please

Elk Inc. Power Bugle..easy to use and sounds good! Had a guy bugle me in the other day and he was using a Mac Daddy, sounded a hell of a lot like an elk and I was embarrased.

Mac daddy is the worst call i've ever attempted to use. Buddy had one and i had to try it. Horrible sound.

I have a Mac Daddy.....don't waste your money...it's not a very good call IMO.  You can press that tab too far and the sound is really bad.  I use to have a sceery lip bugle and I like that one better than the Mac Daddy.

If you have a year to pratice go for a diaphragm call and grunt tub. Once you learn them they work great for turkeys too.

Little Dog Coyote howler brings em in. Try to make it sound like a bugle...works like a charm. I have convinced my little bro too, he was surprised on how well it works.

I use to love my Abe and Sons bugle but I wore it out and couldn't find parts or new ones.
