OLYMPIA - Fishery managers have tentatively scheduled two razor clam digs on morning tides April 6-9 and April 19-23, provided marine toxin tests show the clams are safe to eat.
If approved, Twin Harbors will be open all nine days during the April opener. Long Beach will be open April 6-8 and April 19-20. Copalis and Mocrocks will be open April 19-20. All digs will be held on morning tides
See you on the beach !!

Sorry, Turkey opener for youth, and Turkey weekend for the big boys...besides, I have a ton in the freezer! Better start canning some more for snacks...nothing beats smoked razor clams and cheeze on a cracker, beer in the other hand...
-
Would love directions and a recipe for that Ice!!!
-
In pint jars, cram razor clams in tight, 1/4" below rim. Pinch of salt, table spoon of vegetable oil, and some liquid smoke, just a few drops, not too much. Pressure can, 90 minutes at 15lbs..... enjoy later with beer and friends. Great snack for your sockeye trips!?
-
So you dont put them in a smoker? That sounds like a great snack out fishing!!!
-
Nope, no smoker needed in this case.....
We do smoke our canned salmon first, but clams just the salt, oil and smoke liquid...
-
Looks like we have another coming up :IBCOOL:

I'm going to have to give that a try...

Hard to beat those razor clams. :drool:I may have to hit this one and make a weekend of it. A person gets spoiled after digging in Alaska though. Cleaning the 50 clam limit a day stinks though.

For those looking
Smoked Razor Clams
Put 1 pound BROWN sugar and 2 cups salt in a clean 5 gallon bucket. Add a small amount of hot water to dissolve sugar and salt.
Add cold water to the bucket until it is 2/3 full. Add clams. Soak in the brine for 45 minutes.
Take out and pat dry. Let air dry for 45 minutes.
Smoke for 1/2 hour in smoker ( 1 pan full chips ).
Pack clams in small canning jars. Pressure can for 30 minutes at 15 pounds pressure.
NOTE: This recipe is for about 100 to 150 clams. Adjust brine accordingly

Dang, I've got to go about 1/2 mile to start digging. Went last series of tides and it was easy digging. Love them canned but the skimpy seasons we have been getting I eat most of them fresh.

:whoo: :whoo: :whoo: :whoo: That is the first weekend of my springbreak, I'm making the reservations ASAP at the hotel... In the past I've just frozen them for surf perch bait, I don't know how to clean them correct I guess, I always have problems with not getting out all the sand. I guess I should try it again. You guys make them sound good. :chuckle:
-
If you are going to use the tops for surf perch bait cut them off before adding the clams into the hot water to remove the shells. You will get alot more bites on them if they are taken off pre hot water dip.
-
I usually just put them in the freezer whole, not cooked until I want to use them... I have done really good in the past perch fishing with them.
-
Cleaning the 50 clam limit a day stinks though.
It was 60 when I was there. After a few summers I learned to quit after 15 or so and let everyone else fill their buckets :chuckle:

I'll be out at the end of March. (Not the 2nd weekend of April, that's just too sacred to leave the house.) Gottta try canning them, sounds great. On the last go round of Humpy fishing I did some experimenting with a couple of them. I smoked the crap out of them for just a half hour or so. I then chunked them up and canned them. That was some good eats. Smoked razor clams here I come!

So who is going clamming in the Ocean shores area on the 28th or 29th? I'll be there in a Silver Jeep with two little girls 2 and 3 years old and my wife. Just look for one of the biggest guys on the beach,I'll have on a black hunting washington hoodie, brown neapream chest waders, say hi.
What is a good way to smoke them and have them preserved? Is there someone around town that does that?
thanks
Chris

In days gone by there used to be 'clam cleaners' that cleaned and canned clams but not anymore. You are pretty much on your own. If you bring a pressure cooker and jars you can do it on a camp stove or hot plate in your motel room. The easiest is to just clean them and use a little bit of olive oil, a few drops of canned smoke and a little bit of salt. If you wait till you get back to Curlew you could actually do a short smoke in a regular smoker and then can them, or just eat them fresh, which is hard to beat. I'll be out there just a bit south of the Gitchee Goomee unless we have a tidal wave :)

Hey chris, there are a few houses still around that post a sign "clams cleaned for $" I have seen the signs on a few digs, but never tried them since we clean our own. You could Ice the crap out of them for a few days and clean them later, if you won't be back home with them.... We have done this once, and all was ok....

Were going camping/clamming Fri, Sat, and Sunday. Looking forward to it :chuckle:
