Title: Chukar hunting place for a fat shorthair?
Post by: sled on September 19, 2010, 08:05:42 PM
Ive got two german shorthairs but one is pudgey and out of shape.  Looking for a decently easy place to take her for chukar that wont kill her.  Any ideas?

Take them out to a game farm..There are a few out of Ellensburg.  The will release chukars on nice flat ground for ya..  And if there was an easy place to hunt chukars in this state..it is probably being hunted!  LOL   :)

I'd take them grouse hunting. I don't know of any easy spots for chukar. Except maybe later in the season after some snow that pushes them down.

Chukar and easy dont go hand in hand.  Until the snow flies they will be on those ridges and a major pain to get to like usual.  Once the snow starts pushing em down it gets a bit easier, but you'd be surprised what those buggars can do even in the snow.

Get out for grouse and low land quail and get that dog in shape :chuckle:

x2. Will cover miles of rough terrain finding chukar. Better to start with grouse

I've shot a lot of chukars in my lifetime and I can't think of a single one that was easy.  That is also why they are my favorite game bird to hunt.  Every one you get, you feel as though you have really earned it, as opposed to driving around on a logging road and shooting a grouse sitting on the ground.   Oops.  Did I say that?

Don't worry about the dog.

I am short and pudgey and I have only two or three sites I can hunt for chukar.

Just take her.  I hunted chukar over a pudgey lab and one day she did the most magnificent retrieve of a chukar.  I had hit a double without knowing it and my "real" dog returned with a bird right away.  The pudgey lab finally returned after a half an hour with a chukar in her mouth.  It was the only shinning spot in her 10 year hunting career.

Well, she was responsible for me getting a real hunting dog when she broke off sniffing around a lone sage and joined me for the hike back to the truck.  My friend was twenty yards behind and shot the pheasant that his dog flushed from that lone sage.  That very day I started looking for another hunting dog.

I'd try LT Murray.  you can do that as hard or easy as you want.

Love the photos.  at the risk of hijacking the thread, here is my first one!
