Title: Achery Elk (Success)
Post by: winston2789 on September 21, 2010, 08:13:43 PM
Well I'm finally getting around to posting my hunt...sorry for the delay  :) .
Long Version-
This was my first year hunting archery and I learned a few things. I being a rookie hunting with a bow decided to sight in my broadheads the Wednesday before opening weekend  :bash: . I had been shooting all summer with field tips and was shooting great but I sure learned fast that my broadheads flew different and I needed to get my bow tuned also. Thursday I brought my bow into the shop had it tuned, bought new broadheads and got it dialed in. Friday comes around and I'm litterally running out the door at work load my gear up in the truck hook up the trailer and am on the road. FIVE hours later I make it to elk camp and meet up with my cousin. We eat some food BS a little bit and make a plan for the morning. He has a deer tag and I have an elk tag. We woke up at 3:30 and were hiking in by 4. A little after first light I let out a couple bugles in a big drainage and got two reponses from what sounded like a younger bull and the other sounded a little more mature. I spotted the bigger one almost a mile out and he was a nice 5 but he was pretty far out so we decided to jump over one ridge and see what was over there. After we got over there I spotted I cow along the creek bottom feeding and limping around (hoof rot) not long after I spotted a nice bull following her. I let out a bugle and he didn't respond, then cow chirp and he looked up then raked a tree and followed his cow around the hill a few more yards out of sight. I decided I would go around the hill and try and cut them off going up the creek. Well I went down as far as I could with out making too much noise and couldn't see them anywhere so I went back and when I met up with my cousin he said that he could see them and they had just bedded down. So this time I knew where they were and I head straight down over the hill to come out on top of them. Sure enough after being as quite as possible I sneek with in 55 yards and can finally see them. Somehow I was able to get on a stump to where I could get a shot without them seeing me. I drew back and stood up but couldn't see the bull  :bash: . So I let it down and a spike bull spotted me and acted all funky and dumb. He would go to leave then look back at me, go to leave then look back at me over and over. Then he started stomping his hoof and after he got tired of that he barked at me and got the two other cows to get up and look around. They just started feeding but I still couldn't find that bull. FINALLY I spot some white tips coming out of the brush/grass to the left of them. I ranged him at 62 yard and now the waiting game began. I'd say I waited for that bull to stand up for a good 20 minutes or more. Finally he stood up and turned broadside but stopped halfway behind a little fir and could just see his back half. He took a couple more steps cleared the tree and stopped again  :yike: . I let it fly and a second later I heard it hit him and could see I put a great shot on him. He went maybe 15 yards fell over, kicked a little bit and was out. I double lunged him and it stuck into his shoulder. I was using slicktrick broadheads and can't be happier with the way they performed.
