Title: I'm in Mount Vernon now!
Post by: jordano on September 22, 2010, 10:35:53 AM
hey I just moved up to Mount Vernon and am going to Skagit Valley College to play baseball from East Wenatchee.

I was wondering if anyone could point me in some general directions here for some ducks close by. I don't want any secret spots but some area's that are semi off the beaten path that I can go scout and things like that. I am really looking forward to this year!

Also, I have a bunch of decoys and stuff and would love to go hunt with people this year! I'll give gas money or drive.

Thanks All,

Jordan

hey thanks! so I'm getting one of the otter outdoors stealth 1200... could I still go out in Padilla with that? Just by staying close to shore and getting off quick if nasty weather rolls in??
what were the majority of birds you shot there??

i was actually reffering to an area right off the water that is a bunch of fields some with blinds built in. i dont know the name of it but it's a pretty big chunk of land and alot of bird hunters frequent it.   last year in two 6 hour days between two of us 1st day in layout in blinds we got 4 mallards all male, 3 widgeon, a buffle head, and 2 teals.  The 2nd day we just worked a couple ditches and used some shrubs we got 6 mallards 4 teal.

This is public land.  Set up by WDFW and Ducks Unlimited.  Fair number of ponds that border the dike area leading to Padilla Bay off of Samish Island.

Yeah we went later in the season and boy were they spooky. not to mention all the guys skyblasting at them. The closer to the water you can get the better less idiots in between you and the birds.

Yea, I agree.  I normally hunt elsewhere, but have dabbled with some success there when I'm just out spooking around.  Very easy area to access for hunting.

The Welts unit gets pounded hard! Get there early, and I am not lying when I say the parking lot will be packed full by 330 -4 am on the weekend or a holiday.15 Shot shell max per day. Just keep that in mind if you go out there.

Welcome to the wet side.  Just don't be to disapointed in the duck hunting over here.  Its definatly not the columbia and wheat fields you are used to.  Lots and lots of hunters and pressure.  I been over here 5 years now.  I took my deke's back over to my folks house and go over the mountain a couple times of year to get by duck and goose fix.  The ducks over here taste like mud as well, had to make peperoni out of the birds I shot the first year here could not choke them down fried up.

On a side note if you like to fish, silvers are starting to run on the Skagit and Cascade.  Next year is a pink year, its supposed to be a bigger run than last year.  I quit counting catch and release at 300 pinks, lots of fun on light tackle.

ya, but this rain will have pretty much blown out every river over here for the next 2-3 weeks, bad for silver fishing
