Title: CVA Elkhorn
Post by: Machias on September 24, 2010, 09:26:38 PM: I gotta tell you my new CVA Elkhorn ROCKS. Once I got the sights on, 3 shots in a row, 100 yards, blew a clay pigeon to smithereens. SWEET!!! Oh and thanks to the guys who suggested the Barnes bullets. I used to be a fan of the Powerbelts, but these Barnes are tack drivers!!

one thing to do is: make sure you take the whole bolt apart and clean all parts when you shoot. just don't wipe it off and call it good. you will have a great gun for many years. i have had mine 3 years and love it :IBCOOL:

Using 130 grains powder. seems like a really nice gun, The only problem is my eyesight is crap so sighting in is kinda rough. First time I have sighted in something with/out a scope

Shot my first elk, a 5x6, at 167 yards and dropped him in his tracks with 100 grains of 777 pellets and 300 grain Hornady SST. This was my first muzzleloader season and I'm hooked. I agree with the sights being so so. I use ghost ring sights on my shotgun at work, and am going to find some for the muzzleloader for next year. If anyone has suggestions, feel free.

Post by: js99 on October 30, 2010, 06:52:42 AM: Anyone have any problems with the sights on the Elkhorn. I have one that had the rear sight misaligned out of the factory. A peep sight rear fixed that problem, but now I have problems with the front sight screws. In the field this year the front sight screw back out a little. Created a little wobble in the sight. I decided to take the sight off and put the screw from the factory rear sight in. Now I have two screws that do not seat the sight to the barrel! It seams that the screws are way too soft to even take out and put back in one time. Guess its time to call CVA and get a few spare screws for that sight.

Other than that I love this gun, I just worry that the craftsmanship is less than expected and worry how many seasons my CVA has in it.

Post by: carpsniperg2 on October 30, 2010, 04:03:17 PM: i put after market sights by truglo on all my muzzle loaders. so i have not played with the facotry sights. cva will take care of you, just give them a call and they will make it right. i rounded out of of the heads with a allen wrench. in one of the stock screws and called to buy a new one. they sent it to me for free. :IBCOOL: it was my fault and i wanted to buy a new one and they didn't even make me pay shipping. i was pretty happy they were that nice.

No matter how much time and attention I put into my muzzys, I continue to find rust :bash:. I have come to expect it...but i hate rust on my firearms :bash: :bash:

I remember you telling me that. What I don't remember is if we figured out if you had the sights on there correctly. If I can work it, and if your still down this way. I'll let you shoot my gun and we will see if you like the peep sites on it.

Just cause a barrel is called stainless doesn't mean it won't rust. Trust me I found that out the hard way. Knight makes a gun oil that works great for the out sides of your muzzy. We found it last year just before elk season. My cousin sprayed his handgun with it. Inside and out. After a few day's of hunting in the pouring down rain and snow he pulled his gun out to clean it. He took it apart and found moisture on the inside. Not a spot of rust. If you can find it get a couple of cans.

My dad,brother and I are all about to buy a muzzleloader. From the looking I've done,the Elkhorn seems to be a decent rifle. The Knight Bighorn and T/C Black Diamond are also something worth looking at. The problem is,they aren't made anymore so you'll either have to go used,or find a new one in the corner of some gun shop.

I'd like to get my hands on an Elkhorn,but can't find one locally.

At first,I could barely cycle the action. After cycling it about 100 times its getting better.
