Title: Newbie Needs Area In NE For Elk
Post by: Mustangman on September 29, 2010, 08:21:00 PM
Well, here's my first post. I found this forum last night while researching Elk in NE Washington. I live in Spokane and I'm still trying to break the cherry on my first Elk. Either the wrong sex shows up, my low life prior partners move to intercept the bull I called in or last year, I capped on a big cow in the Bumping GMU. I've been after an Elk for the past 8 years or so. My old Elk camp and prior partners have turned out to be drunks or more concerned about one-upping everyone around them. I now pretty much hunt alone. As a result, I need to be a little closer to home. Can ANYBODY point me to a general area in NE WA for Elk. I've been looking real hard around the South Baldy area. This will be for the rifle hunt this year. I love bow hunting but I'm getting tired of beating myself to death. Blackpowder is pretty cool and I may return to it. Thanks for any direction you can give me.

The elk are scattered up north.  They are there, but in some places the country is so thick you couldn't see the damn things if they were 10 feet in front of your face.  Get a Colville National forest map and drive around for a weekend or two.

49 Degrees North area has lots of various access.  Also north of USK WA east of the river to the ID border.  Good luck.

They are up there, but scattered and few and far between.  If you get a bull in that country - you've earned it.

Thanks for the info. I plan on making the NE area my four year plan. I stay there, learn it well and see what happens. I'm looking forward to participating in discussions as HeadHunter suggested. I have learned quite of bit hunting in various locations around the state. My first scout trip is a week from tomorrow. I'll let you know what I see.

There are for sure elk up there and have to say there is becoming more and more.  Just was told a friend ran into a herd in an area I have hunted for 10 years and never thought to see elk in there.  There are a couple units that are cow or bull which would make things a little easier if you get into them..

Thats the one question that will never get seriously answered.   I'm getting soft as I just helped one member out a bit with info, but he has helped me and probably will in the future some more.  Good luck!  Anyone that really knows probably won't tell you.  That is one tidbit everyone wants to know with any elk.

Especially in the NE...  Boot time and a lot of research is one of the only ways to really figure this question out.  A lot of boot time at that..

Tman and I have been spending a lot of time up there looking for bear. We have seen a lot of elk sign, one huge bull elk and a medium bull moose. We are not after the elk so we are not much help, but the time we have spent up there we haven't really gotten into anything but turds and tracks. They are there, but it is a huge area for them to hide in. Best of luck to you. My boss is heading up there for muzzle, but has not really scouted it and when he heard he say I saw the big bull he was about drooling. It would be a stroke of luck for him to get into them that easy. I don't mind helping you out if you want to head up there and scout, as I am new to that area as well.

Everything stated above is true about the country. Hunted NE hard during the rifle season back in the late 80 early 90's . Last elk we found and shot where on the west side of the river North out of North Port. Might be a start.

Thank you everyone. While I would never ask for specific areas it's nice to see Elk are there and this forum gives me a way of sharing knowledge with others.

Good luck.  :chuckle: I've been hunting that area for over 20 years. Its rough rugged country and 4 years in my opinion is only gonna get you so much. There is alot of area to cover up there and its not easy!
