Title: Hyde's Hangman Moose Odyssey (pics added) *Update*
Post by: Hyde on October 04, 2010, 07:44:17 PM
Day one is in the bag.  Sorry in advance for the rambling.  No pics to post today.  I did get a few shots between rain storms, but I'm too tired to deal with that tonight.  Pretty much rained most of the day, finally broke about 3pm.  I fired up the quad and entered the hunting area at first light.  I made my way to a good vantage point to do some glassing.  The second I turned off the machine, I heard a bull grunt.  The bull continued grunting and finally made his way out into a clearing about 200 yards away.  This was a good bull, and I was fighting everything inside me that was screaming to shoot this bull.  I watched him for about 2-3 minutes trying to study his rack.  He was 15 inches wider that his outstretched ears on both sides.  I guessed him at 50 inches or so, but his paddles were weak compared to some I have seen.  I am standing there, 3 minutes into my hunt and I am staring at a 50 inch bull, on the trail, at 200 yards (I could have driven the quad right up to him).  I said out loud "how do I NOT shoot this bull?"  I gave in and started to load the gun when he walked down off the trail.  I got setup and decided I would take him as soon as he made the small clearing he was heading to.  Somehow, a 800 lb moose disappeared.  I never saw that bull again (I was a little relieved actually, but as the day went on I started to regret not shooting him).  About 30 minutes later, a 30 inch bull showed himself, grunting and grunting.  He walked off and I could hear his grunts long after he left my sight.  I decided to hop back on the quad and try to get below the big bull on the next road below, and see if I could cut him off.  When I got there, I started grunting.  Much to my surprise, a bull answered, and for the next 5 minutes it was like i had him on a string.  He was coming, I could get glimpses of him as he made his way towards me.  Unfortunately, it was the 30 incher I had seen earlier.  I called him to within 50 yards.  A few hours later, I was heading back up to the vantage point when a huge cow stood up 20 feet in front of me.  She just stood there.  I shut down the machine and took out my camera to take a pic or two.  (idiot...)  I no sooner got my camera out when the bull stood up.  He was massive.  It took me about .00005 of a second to decide this was a shooter.  I bailed off the machine, and frantically tried to load my gun.  The cow spooked, and the bull was in hot pursuit.  All I could think of was he looked like an Alaskan Yukon moose. I got two or three glimpses of him as he and the cow trotted off into the thick brush.  I gave chase, and tried to call him back but he was gone.  I didn't see another moose for 3-4 hours until I jumped the "Alaskan" moose once again.  The bull and cow doubled back and were laying 300 yards from where I jumped them the first time.  This time, the cow was laying in a rut pit that I am assuming he dug, and he was laying just off the trail in the trees.  I got my crosshairs on him this time, but I couldn't account for the cow and didn't want to risk it.  I worked him for a bit, he responded and trashed brush and grunted at me, but wouldn't show himself.  Guess where I'll be first light tomorrow?

All in all, it was a great day.  I never saw another person, and never cut a quad track.  I basically had the whole place to myself.  Tomorrow is another day.. I'll be back at it at first light.  And I give my new Suzuki KingQuad 2 thumbs up!  Logged 64 miles today.

The Alaska Bull is down.  I wish I had some riveting story abut how I stalked him, called him away from his cows, ANYTHING exciting.  Sorry.  I was riding my quad up the road at first light, luckily I saw his cow and there he was, just like many of you said he would be.  I said "we meet again..." and gave him a 180 grain Nosler Partition surprise.  300+ yards uphill, 2 shots.  I watched him expire through my scope.  It took me well over an hour to find him, he was up a very steep hillside, I probably shouldn't have tried to scale it, but half way up I realized there was no tuning back.  I couldn't find him once I got to where I thought he was.  Finally after zigzagging the hillside and trying to remember any landmarks, I found him.  That's when I realized I was deep DEEP trouble.  It was 200 yards straight down to the road my quad was sitting on, and it was 100 yards straight up to the next road.  After a few texts to buddies, one who lives in Spokane called and said he needed to get me some help somehow.  I told him "no problem, I got this..."  ohhhh how wrong I was.  This bull is massive, both antlers and body.  He had to weigh 800-900 lbs on the hoof.  Maybe more.  It was all I could do to just gut him.  It took me an hour or more.  My buddy called with the best news I heard since I found out I drew the tag... that he had friends coming.  It took three of us 7 hours to get him to the rig.  I can't thank these guys I had never met before enough.  If that wasn't good enough, they arranged for me to take the moose to a friend's house who has a "meat room" with air con and meat hooks hanging everywhere.  I shot this moose at 7am, I returned to my room at 9:15 pm, and mind you , that was with help.  If I didn't have help... half or more of that bull would have gone to waste.  No doubt about it.  Heck, I couldn't even pick up the head and cape.  No way.  Keep in mind, I am 6'4" tall, weigh 275, and am considered fairly strong.  I couldn't do it alone.  No way.  Not where he died.  I am totally humbled by this whole experience.  A moose is a magnificent creature.  Boddington once wrote that you'll never forget the sight when you walk up on your first downed moose.  He is absolutely correct.  As for the fun stuff... it looks like this moose could be in the top 5 Wa moose, maybe #1.  It was rough scored by a guy who knows how at 188 and change.  49 inches wide, with huge paddles and brows.  I have re-named him the Walaska Bull.  Pics to follow, tomorrow when I get home.

This is a standing offer to those of you who may be so lucky to draw the hangman tag in the future.  I will be glad to go along with you and assist.  Remember though..... if you draw Hangman, you need a quad.  Must have.  Renting one in the area was $250 a day so I just bought one.  Wanted one for a long time anyway.  I'm off to snoozeville now... the Aleve finally kicked in.

How did you manage to cut your finger?

I did 3 numbers on my fingers, the worst being the right pointer.  Right to the bone on the knuckle.  The other two were simple little cuts.  (gutting, skinning, quartering)

I don't know the first thing about scoring, and don't really care, but several locals told me this will "shatter" the Wa record.  It would be a fitting end to such a magnificent animal if he was record class.  I give all the glory to the moose (and the creator), as I am just the lucky slob that happened upon him at the right place and time.  If he doesn't make the book, or break records, he is no less magnificent.  Having a plaque or something official would be cool though!

Yeah, it should be fixable.  I was going to have removable antlers done when it gets mounted.  I guess one will be anyway.  The repaired one may need to stay fixed after repair.

DAMN, did it lose one when you killed it?! I know you probably don't care a whole heck of a lot but I don't think it can be accepted into the record books if the antlers are not still attached to the skull plate. I MAY be wrong because I am far from an expert but I believe this to be the case. Maybe some here can shed a little light on it.

Oh yea....AGAIN....AWESOME BULL!!!!!

An errant 180 grain Nosler took it clean off 2 inches above the burr.  It fits back together like a puzzle piece, and should be repairable.  I admit to being a little amped up on that first shot...

It most certainly is a record class bull Hyde.   He'll look good on the wall for years to come.  I guess the score is a mute point if the antler was blown off.  DANG!

OK, now I see the break under the left hand in the photo, thats too bad, but they can easily fix something like that.  Have them just do the other side as removable when they do the mount and you'll be able to get it around in standard size hallways.  I have a 55" Canadian that I had taxi do removable horn on the left side and it is difficult, but it can be moved around the house.

I haven't figured out how to post, and don't have time to deal with it now.  Check out my Flickr page for the photos.  http://www.flickr.com/photos/sdhyde/sets/72157625118353970/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/sdhyde/sets/72157625118353970/) .  Nice thing about Flickr is you don't need to have an account to view the pics.  (I suggest it though, it's free)  Since I was alone while hunting, I didn't have anyone to take pics.  I used my spotting scope tripod and used the self timer, but the terrain was steep, the tripod was short, and 10 seconds just wasn't enough time to scramble to the moose, align the broken antler, etc before the shutter tripped.  I got a few, and we took some back at the quad.  The pics at the quad show some different angles so you can get an idea of this bull's rack.  He seems to get bigger every time I see him.  I'll have a european style mount done for now, and will have the cape tanned for a mount some day.  We're building a vaulted ceiling cabin down at the beach one of these years, and I will likely hang him there one day.

I made it home with the beast, he is tucked away at the taxidermist's shop, cape is in great shape, and the prognosis on the antler repair is all thumbs up.  Meat is hanging at the butcher's place, (I cut up a fair amount myself, but will have them do the burger and sausage).  I want to thank everyone for the well wishes, and camaraderie throughout this entire experience.  I have come to love this forum, and look forward to logging on every evening when I get home from work.  I learned a lot from this site, which just goes to show you that a person is never too old or "experienced" to learn a new trick or two.  For instance... someone posted the other day about spraying a mixture of vinegar and water on the meat and also using pepper to keep the bees away.  I read that as I was in my Spokane hotel room the night before my hunt started.  Because of that tip, I Googled it and learned even more.  I left a few minutes early and stopped by Safeway (at 430am) and bought a gallon of the stuff, and a HUGE bottle of black pepper.  I tucked it away in my quad carry gizmo.  As luck would have it, I dropped that bull within 20 feet of a basketball sized hornet nest.  At about 10am, the woods was alive with the buzzing of hornets.  They were all over.  I got a water bottle and drank it half way down, then filled it with the vinegar.  I sprinkled it all over the moose and used it to wet my arms, and hat, etc.  I will tell you that was a lifesaver.  The hornets and yellow jackets completely left us alone.  Oh they were buzzing around, but they left the moose alone and concentrated on the gutpile.  I also used pepper, sprinkling it around the ground as someone recommended.  I highly recommend that trick.  A special thanks to Ridgerunner for helping out with info and introducing me to a friend of his in Spokane.  I couldn't have done the hunt without that help.  I'll be glad to pay it forward if and when any of you may need some help.

I'm off to bandage my knuckle and hit the sack.  Back to work tomorrow....

The semi good news is that he will be able to be entered in the SCI book.  I have to take it to the official scorer after the repair, but before the repair is painted.  Then he will confirm if it can be entered.  As long as the antler hasn't been extended in any way, then we're in.  The break is clean, it isn't missing any bone where they join.  Just a little on the back side that can be filled in with an epoxy/bondo mixture.  That was good news this morning!

Unfortunately, the pics I have posted on my Flickr page are all there are.  I was hunting alone, and it was 75 degrees by 1pm so I was concentrating all my efforts to getting the meat out of the woods before it spoiled.  Check back a page or two for a link to my flickr page.  We need a tutorial on here for posting pics.  (or maybe I just need to find it...?)

Thanks for the comments.  He is huge.  Way bigger in person than the pics show.  It seems that when I stand next to an animal or hold a fish, they always look small.  I saw the # 11 bull in Sportsman Warehouse in Fed Way yesterday, this one dwarfs that one.

The official scores are in:  B&C 169 5/8; SCI 424 2/8; 51 1/8 outside spread.  The B&C score included 8 4/8 in deductions for the two "trash points".  Looks like he is the new #6 bull in Washington, based on current published entries.  Not sure if they will accept it officially though due to the antler incident.  A letter has been sent to B&C with full documentation and photos to see if they will accept it.  If they do, then Washington most likely will too.  SCI will accept it.  I can't wait to get him hung on the wall!
