Title: Hunting Idaho next year
Post by: Sneekee23 on October 04, 2010, 08:25:47 PM
Just wondering if anyone has hunted the Frank Church National Forest in Idaho for deer... and if so how did you like it?   I am not one to ask but I when I go to Idaho my soon to be in laws that don't hunt really don't like it when I drop their daughter off and take off for 2-3 days.

Just got back a few weeks ago-Check out my elk in the elk section.

Great trip, but Idaho is VAST.  2-3 days may not be enough. Just getting to the wilderness is about 9 miles from any maintained road.  (hunting is still open in the nez perce natl forest on your way to the wilderness) Also, the Frank Church and Gospel Hump make up the largest wilderness complex in the lower 48, so I'm sure there are areas that are better than others.

I pulled a deer tag just in case, but I was mostly there for elk.  Saw a few whitetails, nothing bigger than a little 3x3.  It was 'any deer' where we were, so you could have shot a doe.  There are some muleys on the breaks of the Salmon, big ones, I would have gone after them if I had more time.  Just remember, 9 miles is a long way with 1/2 a deer on your back.

Let me ask another question then.  My father and I have a trail 90's and have heard that motorcycles are legal over there if you obtain a permit.  Is this the same in the wilderness?  The reasoning is that my father would rather ride on my back then pack in 9 miles.

You would have to research the area, the trail I went in on was not open to motorcycles.  However, if you find a trail that will get you TO the wilderness on a motorcycle, the ride ends there.  Horses and hikers only from there.  No mountain bikes either.

On a side note, 2 up on a trail 90 on a singletrack trail with gear is a recipe for trouble  :twocents:

I am planning on hunting it next year... It is late in the game this year.  My dad and I both have trail 90's, I couldn't imagine having two people on one trail 90.  My plan is to head over for two weeks next year just trying to get a head start. Thank you for your help.
