My daughter has a 6mth old male springer and when they are away like now he is very calm but as soon as one of my girls comes in he goes nuts jumping up on them and stuff.Do any of you springer owners have any tricks to stop this he is very high strung we have not got a chance to take him out on birds yet.any help would be great

I'd suggest taking him to a good obediance class. It make training for hunting so much easier when you have a reliable recall and sit(HUP, spanielize for sit). I don't know where you live but here in western washington there is the Mount Rainier Sporting Spanial club(all breed spanial club) and the Western Washington Springer Spanial club. Both have group training days and Hunt Tests. My handle says it all AWS-American Water Spanial

A lot of it has to do with the people's actions and attitude. When my girlfriend walks in the door and sees my dog she will start talking high pitch and he will start jumping on her and she does nothing. When I walk in I am calm and if he jumps on me i give him a solid whack and get down on his level to greet him.

thats exactly what happens with my girls they talk to him in this voice and he thinks ahh crazy time.Thanks again

Training classes are great. However the root of the problem is the greeter. Wether it is A family member or a guest, they need to be informed of the proper way to greet him. There is no need to be insensitive about it, just inform everyone that this is in the best interest and for the mental health of the animal. Over time you will find much more enjoyment from the animal. I have not had this problem with family members but have had friends who felt that getting the dog all wound up was the proper way of showing affection. This always set my training back quite a bit. Oh and don't forget the classes, take the girls with you. There is always something new to learn. Good luck.

I have always had a problem finding good breeders locally. Sounds like you did and that's great. Been looking for a Brittany for a while now and seems like I am going to have to travel quite a bit to find what I want.

Springer's from hunting stock are a little wired until about 3 years old. They are wonderful dogs and very strong people dogs. Teach the girls how to work with the Springer's and what you expect. There are some very good video's on training Springer's. The more you can get out with them, the better they act. They need to learn what is play time and when it is training or work time. Most important to teach them to hup, come and stay. They should be doing those things by 10 weeks. I start them retrieving when I get them at 7 weeks. All training done only while the pup is interested. When they get tired of retrieving, quit. If you start with a few number of repetitions may be 2-3 they really enjoy it. I always start the retrieving in the house in a hall way. They can not stray from side to side. I use a sock to start with. he sock is not a play toy. It is put away when not used for training. Be consistent and show the pup lots of love.

Run them. Exercise them as much as posible. Then, quick thump when they jump up. Pup springers are high strung, but I love them. Congrats on the pup.
