Title: Need help with a handicap hunt.
Post by: Titan-1 on October 10, 2010, 06:01:55 PM
Hey everyone, Recently I was contacted by a woman who had a special request. Her husband has cancer the Doctors have given him less than a year to live. He is not in the best condition, he sometimes uses a walker to get around and is physically not strong. His last request is to go on a Blacktail deer hunt and harvest his last buck.

His family and friends have asked if I would take him on a deer hunt, They said not to worry to much about the kill and he would just be happy going.

Well, Of course I said yes and I am honored to take him, Although I am determined to get him on a Blacktail Buck. The problem is he cant get around, I cant even just take him road hunting because if we see something he is unable to jump out and shoot that fast.

I thought about taking him East side for Whitetails but he can not go that far and doesn't want to.

I hate to ask but here is where I need you help.

I would love to find a piece of private property with an orchard or? that has regular deer coming in. He only has a couple days that he can go out and this is going to be physically hard on him so I hope to put him in a blind in an orchard and sit with him.
I know this is a lot to ask of anyone but I cant stand to think of this man passing without having this request fulfilled.

I have contacted a few people and have a couple spots to go so far but non of them have REGULAR bucks coming in, just here and there. So I'm not without a spot to go but if you have a for sure thing that would be great. It doesn't need to be a big buck, just a buck!!!

If you have any Ideas please let me know ASAP.

Thank you all and have a great season.

It may not be an option in your case, but a legally disabled hunter may designate a hunting companion who can shoot for him.

I think that this is a great thing that you are doing. I had a cousin pass from cancer about 5 years ago. He wanted to hunt and fish up to the end. One of his brothers and myself took him deer and elk hunting and also took him to Sekiu fishing on my boat. He saw whales and other animals out in nature while enjoying his last days. Our last day out was elk hunting where he was tired, but still did it with a smile on his face. He passed about 30 days later in the hospital. I know that these outings meant the world to him and helped add some quality to his last days.

I do not have the connection that you are looking for, but hope that someone here does.

Good luck

Joe

I have a handicap hunters card. Have him go to the doctor. Have the WDFW forms signed by the doctor, fax it to Brenda Kane at the WDFW. She will send him the placard and all he has to do is put you down as a hunting companion. This is just the basics of it.
Hope this might help somewhat. It takes about 1 1/2 weeks if I remember right.

thank you for the info but I know he wants to pull the trigger himself and I don't blame him, I would want the same. If I can get him in an orchard where deer frequent and he can get a rather close shot then I know we can pull this off. It's not about me, It's all about him. We are going to film the hunt and give all his family DVD so they have it to remember him with. Thanks again everyone.

Very nice of you.  I would encourage you to obtain a hunting companion permit just in case there is a wounded animal that he cannot track.

If he was interested in the east side with a little more lead time I could have gotten him into some orchards in the Methow or wheat fields in Douglas County.  If something like this comes up in the future let me know.

Good thing your doing, a double thumbs up!

So far a few people have contacted me trying to help line something up and others have had some with some good ideas but nothing is set in stone so far so. If anyone has something please let me know. I know this is a huge favor but I cant think of a better reason to do it than this. I only have a couple days to figure it out. Thanks to everyone for trying, you all are great people and this is just one more reason I love this site!!! Hope everyone has a great season

Titan you are a good man. My dad died of cancer and that is all he wanted to do was go hunting for one last time. He went but never got one. I know he was happy just to be out there with his boys and grand kids. Take lots of pics so the rest of us can see the hunt.  :bfg:

Thanks, I can only imagine what it must be like to know your not going to be here next year. I know I would want someone to drag me out for a last hunt if it were me so I just really want to make this happen for him. We will see....
