Title: Scouting 560
Post by: jtaghansen on October 12, 2010, 02:22:33 PM
Going scouting this weekend in 560 even know it will be the opener for deer.  Never hunted this area in the modern season before I've always been up there for muzzleloader.  Curious to see how much of a zoo it is, during muzzy season I vary rarely see another hunter.

Does anyone here hunt the modern season in 560 for elk. Not looking for any hunting tips just wondering how busy it gets.

Hunted it for a couple years from the Trout Lake end.   Won't go back during a modern season, you could realistically find less people at a Mariner's game.  Most of the elk have been pushed or shot at long before daylight. >:(  It's no different than any of the other St Helen's or Willapa Hills units.

Drew and east side modern tag this year and then it back to slingin arrows for me.

560 has some real honey holes but figure on lot'sa help for the extreme packs involved.  I hunted it for 30 years with a great deal of success before giving in to my advanced age and abilities.  Over 100 x's on the map we've kept of all our party's kills.  Might just sell that map some day.  Maybe enhance my retirement.

I'll buy it! I've been hunting there for 3 or 4 years and my dad has his whole life. 30 some years and he's only taken 1 bull. I've never even seen a bull during hunting season, besides in the back of trucks ;)

Didn't know it was open for Muzzy?  When did you hunt it with a muzzle loader?  Was that for deer?

Maybe time to find another unit or hunting spot?

Maybe he hunted 574/578 with a muzzleloader, near the border with 560, which would be in the Southeast corner of 560. I don't know. But I don't remember there ever being a muzzleloader season in 560 either.

Last year I hunted in west klickatat. We had 2 cow tags and didn't see a elk the whole time. We walked hours and miles eveyday. The people we talked to never saw a thing either. I've been in coweeman and see elk but no bulls. I'm going in a few weeks to scout a new place in 560 I've heard was pretty goood. Seasons coming up soon for modern and still haven't figured out where to go.. :( :bash:
