I am trying to find where I read that? Didn't he claim to shoot some 400 yard elk with a 44 mag... and drop it???

Nope it was a mule deer and the story is in Sixguns by Keith.

According to his book it was a Mule deer at 600 yards. Appearently the hunter he was guiding had wounded it.

it was actually a 6" smith and wesson

I believe the story is also told in his autobiography hell I was there. I also have it told in a magazine article that was reprinted a few years back.
