Title: Second Deer Tag Question
Post by: General Disarray on October 19, 2010, 09:10:08 PM
This might have been asked already but I didn't find it in my search.  My son and I drew Second deer tags for Peola Nov 1-12.

After reading this in the regs, am I right to think that if we still have our general season tags and go purchase our 2nd deer license we will be legal to shoot 2 deer apiece during the special permit hunt?

Notes: You must purchase a second deer tag to participate in this hunt and the second tag can only be used in the permit hunt. The second tag must be the same weapon choice as your first tag. Your first and second deer tags can each be used to take a deer during this hunt. The first deer tag can be used during the special hunt or the general deer season. You may hunt only with the hunting method in compliance with your tag.

The WDFW made a correction to that statement:

For the second deer category under the notes at the top, the notes should only include the following text:

Since there is no general season in 178 Peola during Nov 1-12, then you can't use your general season tag to shoot a deer.  The general tag is only valid in the general seasons, and the second tag is only valid during the Nov 1-12 dates for a whitetail doe.

You do not have to fill your first tag (main tag) prior to filling your second tag. You can fill them in any order.

Your main tag is only good for the General season, in a GMU that is open for the general season. I dont know of any part of the state (other than permit areas) that are open for deer November 1-12. You will have to go there or somewhere else during the regular general season (early or late) if you want to try to fill your first tag.

In the future, if you want to be able to fill both in one trip. Look for a 2nd deer permit that is open during the general season. The cool thing about that is many times a 2nd deer permit is for antlerless, so you usually have a good chance at tagging something, and possibly both. The downside is, it is probably crowded with people during the general season.
