Title: Good day for crabbing!
Post by: jaredpost on October 20, 2010, 09:53:49 PM: Well I took my daughter on her first boat trip today in an attempt to catch some crabs. We launched at the nisqually launch around 9 this morning and the fog looked like it was lifting. We dropped both pots off and putted around a little bit and then dropped a line to keep her interested. After about an hour soak we when to pull the pots and head home. Short trip because we had out of town guests coming. I pull up the first pot and HOLY SMOKE, there were 7 dungies in it with only 1 not legal. We picked the smallest one to throw back and headed to the next pot. I get this one to the surface and there was a huge fricken star fish in the pot, about 18 inches accross. Oh ya there were another 5 dungies and a redrock in it. So overall a great day and first experience with the 3 year old.

Next it was time to head back to the car. We started the boat up and heading back but the fog had come back and I could not see more than 50 feet in front of the boat. So traveling at a snails pace we headed towards what I thought was the launch. It ended up taking over an hour to find our way back. I don't have any gps or depth finder so I was just left to my own instincts. I knew where the sun was compared to the direction we needed to go but when we finally came to see the land we were about a half mile away from the launch. I followed the shore all the way back to the launch and when we got about 200 yards from the lauch the fog was gone. I was starting to get very nervous after driving for a half hour and seeing nothing when it should have only been a 5 minute ride. It was a great learning experience and am thankful we both made it back happy and with a boat full of crab.

Post by: C-Money on October 20, 2010, 10:31:37 PM: YUM! Looks like a great meal! You should look into a GPS on ebay... I picked up a Magellan for $50 new in box! Easy to use. Glad you made it back safe!

Very strange indeed but I did not have one single female in the pot.

I have honestly never heard of a crab being done. If you want to give it a try I'd be glad to give you one just to see what it looks like.

I once got lost in the fog for 3 hours while pushing and oyster scow. That day I went and bought a compass for every boat that I owned. This was way before gps.
