Just looking for some advice/direction. My first year hunting turkeys and I didn't seal the deal this spring but I got real real close with in 70 yards on a big tom.I am going over to < GM 105 > and have never hunted the area before.I know its a shoot in dark to try fall hunting but I got a weekend to kill. Any direction or advice or something would be really helpful. :o

First and most important .... READ YOUR FALL HUNTING GAME LAWS ***
Unit 101 is NOT open during the Late Fall Season. Only Units open are 105 thru 124.
Easiest thing to do is scout to locate and pattern the birds. Then setup between the roost and where they usually go (ie - ambush). After that determine the direction they're going and use the terrain to get there brfor them. Note - Their eyesight and hearing are too good to spot and stalk.
If you can scatter a flock to the four winds (ie - not just a flush in one direction), you can setup at the breakup point and try fall turkey calls. If you want a tom, then start gobbler yelps and/or gobbles within 10 minutes. If you want a hen or poult, then use kee-kee-runs and/or hen assembly calls after 35 to 40 minutes.
Again ... Unit 101 is NOT open during the Late Fall Season.

:P :bash: :bash: DA I Meant 105 but I bow hunt and was thinking about 101 when I wrote it. Thanks for the info though, is a poult a beardless male turkey?
-
A poult is this years hatch whether male or female ... 1 year old males are called JAKES and females Jennies ... by the second year they are usually mature toms and hens.
No problem with the unit ... just didn't want to see you "busted" for hunting in a closed area ... ie: the reason I bolded and underlined.
Good luck ...

So is 101 open for fall turkeys? :dunno: :chuckle: :chuckle:

No 101 is not open for fall turkeys but its open for deer on November 10Th.

Unit 101 was one of the early fall units Sept 25 - Oct 8 for one either sex bird in addition to the two beardless birds you could get in Units 105-124.
However only Units 105-124 is open for the late fall season Nov 20 - Dec 15 for one either sex bird only.
