Title: 501 Lincoln for modern firearm
Post by: DoubleJ on October 25, 2010, 01:01:48 PM
My 8 year old son cannot believe his season is over after shooting his doe this weekend so, I have decided to suprise him with a modern firearm elk tag for his birthday.  I was looking at unit 501, Lincoln since it looks like elk live there and there is a 3pt min. OR antlerless.  He isn't going to care what he shoots as long as it's legal.  Anyone have any ideas about this place?

The other place I was looking at was GMU 672.  It's 3pt min. only though.

I could lie and say I'm not looking for a honey hole but, I'm not big into liars so, to be honest, yes, I'm looking for honey holes  :P

Is modern season on the west side even a good idea with a young boy?  I've heard horror stories.

Really?  No input?  OK, I'm not looking for honey holes.  Just general ideas about the GMU.  PM's are more than welcome.

It gets way more hunting pressure than it deserves.  Which is to say too many people for so little elk.  I have seen elk in there though.  Better odds of going to a 3 point or better unit and getting a bull than getting a cow out of the 501 in my opinion.  But the ability to shoot a cow with a rifle without a draw permit is too tempting to a lot of people.

Lincoln might be one of the safer GMU's during elk season, as I don't think you will hear much, if any, shooting. Unless people get bored and decide to set up their empty beer cans in the road for some target practice.   :chuckle:

Seriously, Lincoln has an either sex elk season, not because of high elk numbers, but to keep the elk population low. Does that answer your question?

Very much so.  Thank you guys.  I will head to a different GMU
