I am thinking about taking up archery hunting i have never shot a bow before and would like to get a lot of practice under my belt before i go out. What is a good beginner bow?

Diamond has some great bows at great prices, they shoot very comfortably and are pretty quick. Give them a look for sure.

I miss the days of having a local archery stop....... :'(
you would probably do right by yourself, if you found some archery hunters to take you to the range and let you try their bows before any purchase....

Best advice I can give is get out there and shoot as many different models, not just brands, of bows you can get your hands on. Then get the one that feels most comfortable to you in your price range. My first bow was a Reflex Growler. Not near a top of the line bow but it shot well and not bad on the wallet either. I have since upgraded to a Mathews Z7 and I can really tell the difference between the two. Bottom line, get the best you can afford. :twocents:

It all depends on what you want. Are you wanting to get a bow to see if you even like the idea of bow hunting or do you want to get a bow and start hunting. How much do you want to spend? I picked up a Diamond THE ROCK as my first bow and love it! Spent about $700 total now to get it set up the way I want it. On the other hand I picked up an older PSE Nova for $90 on Craigslist, added the cheap sight that came with the rock package and it shoots GREAT! In fact My uncle decided to give bowhunting a try this year and is shooting my PSE. If you are SURE you want to jump right into the sport and spend the $$$ to do it, then definately go shoot as many bows as you can and get what is most comfortable to shoot. Since you're in Renton go see Larry/Ryan/Dennis at the Federal Way Wholesale Sports. They have a good selection of Diamond bows and other quality brands. They'll work with you to figure-out what fits you well at your price point.

Hey mtbiker, thanks for the plug, but we are really low on Diamond bows right now. We do have a couple of the Rock 2, and a bunch of the kid's bows. We have a good selection of PSE ( sorry no pro line) and Bear, and we have a shipment of Quest and Carbon Tech due any day. IMO the Quest Hammer is a really good bow at an excellent price point. We also have the Athens Accomplish 34, but that is a high end bow, and may not be what you are looking for. Stop in for a visit, We are open from 9Am to 9PM Monday though Saturday, and 10AM to 6PM on Sunday.

Aren't beginners supposed to start with "training wheels" ?
and then when they lose all their "modern weapon" bad habits switch to a "real bow"/

I'm learning on a Martin. I like it, it's a nice forgiving bow and I've killed a couple blacktail with it.

Don't know if you are east side or west side, but out in spokane valley at wholesale sports they had some previous model bowtech guardians on sale. it was my first bow i walked out completely set up with EVERYTHING i needed. for about $600. everything sights, riser, silencer, gold tip arrows, release, arm guard (i chewed my arm pretty good practicing there) field points and of course the bow. all sized and adjusted to to me. i thought it was a pretty deal, and after sacrificing about 9 arrows in my inital practicing it paid off i filled my tag with a mule doe strait through the heart. so what if it was at seven yards.

I have to agree with Ihuntelk2. There are plenty of used bows and compounds on market for someone who wants to try one out, without having to spend the money for a new one.
