OK. The rules are simple:
You must be under 21 years of age.
The contest runs from NOW until, April 8,2008 at 7:00pm. For this first attempt "I" am the ruler of the contest. The prize is a Rick Robbins Cow Horn Howler, it is a beauty. It has called Coyotes!! I will pay postage to the winner.
OK, here is the question, answer in 50 words or less.
You are hunting with a person that you have never hunted with before. You are both carrying loaded shotguns for some bird hunting. While walking towards your hunting area you must cross a fence. You are behind the other hunter, when he gets to the fence, he pushes down the wire and stumbling slightly, steps right over the fence.
What would you do and why?

Great question carl! Im jelious i have the answer and i want the howler.....
It would be one more call that longtat couldnt have that wasnt broken, LOL.......
Good luck guessing the answer guys.......
-
Let him know its not safe to carry any loaded firearm over a fence and I would unload, offer my gun to him while I step over and suggest he do the same for next time. Best to unload to avoid an accidental discharge no matter who you hunt with
-
(1) Gun not loaded (2) hand him my gun (unloaded) (3) hop over fence............Thats what i would do because its the safe way to go.. :hunter:
OR
i would turn around (in mind i never hunted with him before) and say im not hunting with you because your to unsafe :nono:
-
Okay whats going on here? Feel free to expand your response. I will not make a choice until the end. Do I have to open up the contest for folks up to 41? :) :)

Seems that there is allot of information to be explained in 50 words !! :dunno: maybe that is what they are having a hard time with.
-
To expand Ill say that not having hunted with this particular fellow, there is no reason to be mad or not hunt with him ever again. There is every reason to improve his safety skills in order for a safer (and hopefully) more successful hunt. If anything I would feel ashamed for not having thought ahead and offered my advise for a precautionary measure. No one is perfect. As we all know there is no other partner that is harder to find then a good hunting partner
-
And yes I was counting words in my first post :chuckle:
-
OK no word limit, so far getting up to 50 has not happened. :IBCOOL:
This is all for fun and trying to get kids interested or keep them going.

HIT THE DECK!!! HE is being wild with a loaded weapon.
First I would explain that when dealign with firearms I take safety very seriously because bullets cannot be taken back and that I am dissapointed in the way he had just handled his firearm. I would also tell him that I would expect the same from him and that if he could not do that then the hunt would end right now and that I would never hunt with him again. Then I would tell him how he should have crossed that fence.
I would explain to him that when approaching a fence to unload his fiream and to hand it to me and then cross and then i would hand him his gun back . then i would do the safething and unload my gun and hand it to him on the other side of the fence then cross over the fence myself and get my gun back load back up and continue with happy hunting!!

Ok, we had three entrants, Armadillo, Chris_D and Mossback91.
All of you gave excellant answers and you all covered the SAFE part of the questions. I congratulate you all and think this says alot about young hunters and how safe they really are. Chris is alot younger than the other guys and I have been keeoing that in mind.
Armadillo: covered the answers, was thoughtful and thinking ahead.
Chris_D: also covered the answer and was forceful! in his feelings about safety.
Mossback91: covered the answer and was entertaining!
So after careful thought, the Judge has decided,(with my wifes permission):
That Armadillo!!!!!!! wins the Howler!!!!!
Chris_D!!!!!!! wins a great internal reed Bearman Rick call, (wooden turned by Rick himself!)
And
Mossback91!!!!!!!! wins a great internal reed Bearman Rick call, ( Elk antler by Rick)
PM me your addresses and I will send the calls out, Thanks for entering!! Be safe, hunt alot and have fun!
I am leaving to hunt Turkey Saturday, so I might not ba able to mail until I get back.

Great job guys!

It is amusing that no one mentioned that this scenario is covered and practiced in the Hunter Safety course and anyone having taken the course would have the same answer. So. if you saw the fence coming up, you should have told the person to unload his gun and you would hold it while he crossed. It should never have gotten to the point of him/her stumbling while crossing the fence with a loaded weapon. Prevent it before it happens.
-
It also does not mention how far you were behind the other hunter. Or that said hunter may have been of an age where the hunter education requirements were not an issue, could have been an old fart with bad knees !!
I think the answers were very good considering there could have been 651 different scenario's.
Great Job, and Thank you Bofire for including the kids in here and getting them interested, also Killbilly for for his efforts with some of the youth hunters in here, I like to see the expressions on their faces when a plan comes together.
Keep it up !!!
-
I just got back from dropping the calls into the mail.
Good Hunting guys~!!
