I have hunted 516 a lot over the years and would not waste my time hunting it. My buddy drew a second doe tag in the unit and we could not find a single doe for him. I have never hunted 513 for deer.

Weird, my dads neighbor and his crew hunt it every year late buck. Last year they went 5 for 6, the smallest being a 3x4. I know right where they go. Its not easily accessible at all. Might want to bring along good hiking boots.

I know those units are close to you but they suck imo. Drive a little father west and there is a lot more deer. And I mean a lot more deer. I wouldn't waste my time in those units. And I have hunted 516 most of my life.

how far west are we talking? a different gmu? i just want a deer for the freezer not looking for a trophy,
-
I would look at 505, 520, and 667. A lot more deer in those units.

513 is an interesting unit. If your the hearty type, there are trails that an old timer told me go back into the timberlands just outside the wilderness boundary he plugged some monster bucks many years ago. Private lands in 513 would be a gold mine. I've hunted 516 and it get's pretty high, sub-alpine country. Saw lots of good sign, gutpiles, etc.. never a buck. I honestly saw more deer in the Randle GMU next door, or as was said, in Mossyrock. I would imagine without scouting Packwood a hunter would have a challenge to find a good buck.

I like Green Trails Maps. They are great for carrying around on a hunt. They fold up nicely to fit in a pocket. But I have found that they may not show all roads as accurately as other maps, such as DNR, FS maps, Topo Software, etc.

You can probably get them online before the late hunt season, or REI, Sportco, and other outlets carry them. Average price is about $6 and change for a map.
