Has anyone shot a yoty with a bow? My 13 year old wants to try his luck at shooting a yoty with his bow... He is a very good shot out to 30 yards with his 30 lb bow.. Is it legal to shoot yoties with a 30 lb pull? and if so any advice would be helpful.. We live out in the county and have many song dogs around our property. He is thinking about a tree stand and baiting them in and trying his luck that way.. Any advice on how to get him a dog would help... Thanks.... JAMNG

I can tell you it wont be easy to get one that close and draw back and get a shot off. Yotes are very fast and I dont think I would shot much over 20yds at one with my old bow which shot at 290fps. Make sure you have a decoy or something to catch its eye so you get away with some movment.

Would a small blind in a tree help with concealling movement and do you think they are to fast to to try and shoot with a bow that small? JAMNG

What bow is it? Some of the small bows are kind of fast. A blind or tree stand would be your best bet. The problem with a blind and a yote is that they will know it shouldn't be there unless it's been there for a while.

About 12 years ago I shot one with my bow that came in while I was turkey hunting, it is possible.

its not a problem, but ya got to call them in first, my average shot is maybe 50 yards, but half are in the 5-30 yrd range. when the yotes hits a dip, or passes a bush, just draw and hold, and wait. i want to use my bow, but my arrows are maybe 23 dollars each, so i'll stick to the R15.

My Son wants one just like that but with him in it instead of you in it . :) He found a tree today to build a stand in and will try to work on it this weekend. demontang My son shots a buckeye with graphite arrows with 100 grain broad heads not the fastest arrow but if coming from a tree stand unseen by the dog might work...Wish him luck... I know one thing he will spend hours in the stand to try and even get a shot off at one... Got to love a kid that has the determination to try this at 13 years old....Thats my son... JAMNG

I shot a red fox with a bow but that was in Australia and there are so many fox there that it isn't a fair comparison.

Jamng, were are you located. I may be able to help supplement a bait site with some beaver. Yotes and bobs love it.

Wow, I've seen your bait sights on here before.. Not sure if I need all that.. I live in Enumclaw up off the white river. I have about 150 acres of green belt around my place but I do have several people that live fairly close to me.. We have yoties almost every night howling all around our place... I Have the old AR-15 with night vision and we have done a good job of keeping down the population but the boy needs to try and do this own his own.. I want to bait them in for him but not every critter out of the canyon.. I.E Bears, Cats, Coons. Need to try something less powerful then beaver and dead carcass. A lot of the dairy Farmers throw out there dead caves and if I need I could get one of them.. I do want to say thank you very much for the offer though... I will keep it in mind if we can't figure out how to get one to come in..... JAMNG

These are more fun. But back to coyotes, Baiting a coyote in and getting a shot would probably be harder than calling one in. Coyotes coming in to bait are more suspicious than one hearing a meal and coming in hard. If you know someone who can call and set up with a good idea of where the coyotes going to come from, have them setup about 15 yrds or so from the shooter. Then the coyote's attention is on the caller not the shooter.

Yeah I would call one in too. I have seen the idea of baiting then calling over that site. Ive been thinking of trying this idea myself. Ill I can say now it try try again. If your ever on this side shot me a line and Ill take you out for a try here :hello:

a ground blind/ tree stand would help a ton. in the mourning with a tree stand the rising temp should carry your sent upward so less chance of them smelling you, also yotes have no need to look up no predators from there. either way i would call away from the shooter, and try and draw one past the blind or shooter. not to the shooter but past. also find a place where there is more then one, more compition for food so they charge in harder and from more directions

I think the tree stand is what we are going to go with. Found a nice old tree with a place about 25 feet up to build a platform for him to stand comportably for long periods of time... We have lots of dogs around but its hard to see one after sun up.. To many red necks like me with rifles in the front seat.... JAMNG

Kudos to the guys that shoot them on the ground. Some serious skills there
Have shot 2 yotes and 3 foxes from a tree stand while deer hunting in WI and KS.
Have to make it a goal to take one on the ground this year
