Title: Leaving for Montana Tomorrow
Post by: Gobble on November 10, 2010, 05:22:20 AM
I can't wait, my buddy and I are leaving for a 12 day deer hunt in the Big sky country  :IBCOOL:. Lets hope our scouting trip back in Sept pays off, Both of us have a buck and doe tag so the truck is going to turn into a meat cart  :chuckle:. It sure makes it hard to concentrate at work.   Wish us luck  :whoo:

Finally getting around to posting some pics of our hunt, We both ended up taking Average 4 pts and each of us took a doe. We passed on so many decent 3 pts  and smaller 4 points I couldn't count. I passed on a 26 in wide 24-26 in tall 4x5 that I really regret not taking in the first ten min of hunting, this was our first trip to Montana and they always say don shoot the first deer you see, we had just seen 5 bucks in 5 min. and this one happened to be on public land by 10 feet, the others were on private on the way in. The first two days of hunting were great, the weather was perfect for hunting, our first day of hunting was nov 13 and we were hunting for 12 days. We saw several smaller bucks and a few decent ones on the firs two days but nothing to write home about so I passed on them, a couple were huge 3x3's that I could have taken easily. We had rutting deer everywhere and had several 3pts and a 4x2 pushing does within 20 yrds of me, That never gets old  ;) I love watching them.  After the first 2 days of hunting the weather really went bad, It was cold, raining, snowing, and road conditions were terrible. I don't know how many inches of rain fell the next 3 days but it was WET. When it rains there the deer bed down and don't move, nothing like here where the deer just go about their business. We weren't seeing hardly any animals and we were starting to get worried, 2 days had gone by and the animals were no where to be fouind. I spotted my buck  a half mile away bedded down at the base of a juniper bush. I had a small draw that would take me to within 100 yrds of the buck that I could make a stalk from. I headed out from the truck and my buddy stayed back to watch the show. I made my way thru the drainage   periodically popping up to check my heading. I finally finished closing the distance to 40 yrds. I spotted the buck and watched him for 20 mins trying to decide if I was going to take him, here is the draw where I made my stalk from...

After staring at the buck for 20 mins thru my scope I decided I would rather take a smaller 4x4 than eat tag soup. It was a tough decision for me because we had passed on several deer that were bigger. The wind was blowing 40 mph by now and I had to time the gusts in order to take a shot, I was resting my gun on a small pine tree and had to shoot thru a small sage bush he was bedded behind.....BANG. The 180gr Nosler found its way. The buck had no idea what hit him. My buddy watched the entire thing thru his binos a half mile away, he said all he saw was the deer fall over the several seconds later he heard the boom. Buck Down
