Title: hunting the blacktail rut...?
Post by: OUTDOOR_BEAST-84 on November 11, 2010, 09:01:00 AM
ive read a lot about how the blacktail rut is the most misunderstood of all deer. ive learned about their habits and tendencies but lack info in the "how to persue" area. will blacktail respond to rattles? grunting? should i pick up scent lure and drag it around behind me or hang it and wait? i want to be prepared as possible for my late modern season and give myself the best chance of filling the freezer. thanks guys! i want to learn as much as i can, as i admit what i know isnt much. i appreciate the help.

You can rattle and call them up kinda like whities but not as aggressive.  I have found that if you rattle too hard it will run them off.  BTKR could probably give you some real good advise on this.

nice. cant wait to hear what everybody has to say. my big game hunting experience has all been gathered in wyoming and iowa so the terrain of w wa and the ghostly blacktail have me curious and challenged.

As PB said, the rattle will work, but it will send them into the next GMU if your too aggressive. I have also had excellent results with a doe/fawn bleats.  :twocents:

im thinking of more questions as i sit here reading magazines. how (if at all), does the weather effect the rut's peak? how much area will a blacktail cover? will they roam more during the rut? (do they spend most life in a small area like whitetail or do they roam for miles like mulies?) (i know they are technically a mule deer but have heard they have some whitetail tendencies as well...)? its going to be a full moon this late season. will that hinder the chance of seeing a nice buck in the daylight? during a steady rain will they continue to move around and feed or will thay bed down and wait for a break (it sometimes rains for weeks at a time, i cant imagine they just lay low because of a light shower... were talking bout washington...)? whats the best way to tackle the thick, underbrushy, noisy terrain that we have in w wa? ha i think thats all my questions for now... ill have more soon im sure. thanks again for any insight...

On page 7 of the deer hunting section there is a thread called Big blacktails, tips, tricks helpful hints. I would read it lots of good info also bow4elk has a site that has a bunch great info on blacktails.

I called in a dandy 4pt blackie for a buddy during the modern general season. I could hear the deer in the thick brush next to us, but we had no idea if it was a buck or a doe. I gave a very soft doe bleat and he started grunting and came out of the brush 20 yards downwind looking for that doe. One shot from my buddy's muzzleloader and he was down. His first buck and it was a stud! I love it when people say the "Islands" only have dog sized deer. Not this one.

ive called in two and rattled countless times, one was lightly ratteling just a mock fight sound and the other was like a full board fight with grunts. ive mixed it up with grunts and different types of rattleing, i just think its kinda hit and miss. i havnt found a particular pattern too it yet but it sure is cool to see a nice 4 point come chargin in
