Title: Rattling question.
Post by: Gutpile on November 11, 2010, 03:48:54 PM: I've never had any luck with it till today. Well, kind of. I went out in hopes of rattling up a buck today and actually did but the sob snuck in behind me and busted me. I heard him run off and crash through the timber. Looks like he was trying to downwind me as I found his tracks which were about 20 yards away. Needless to say I was pretty stoked. I've always wanted to rattle one in and sure hope to this season. This brings me to my questions.

Do they indeed try to downwind you?

Do they typically sneak in, or do they come in aggressively looking for a fight? I believe this guy was coming quick judging by his tracks but the terrain made good tracking difficult. He sure left in a hurry. :chuckle:

Any help would sure be appreciated.

Damn that was exciting, can't wait to do it again.

Based on my experience maybe 10% of the time I have had bucks run in full bore with no regard for the wind direction. So my advice is make sure you are careful in your stand location selection( good concealment and cover) and you have a clear shot in the general downwind area when rattling. If you have a buck hang up out of shooting range try tickling the antlers together.
I find rattling sequence of about 30 seconds and wait 20-30 minutes between rattling sequences. As with most wildlife calling do not over do it. :twocents:

When I rattle bowhunting I like to use a tree stand. If on the ground I prefer to have someone rattle for me and I sit about 20-30 yds in a downwind direction of the person doing the rattling

I've rattled several bucks in and it's all about timing. Buck to doe ratio is one of the biggest. All of my success has been because I was seeing more bucks than does. Went out this morning and got nothing to come in. This evening didn't call and had a buck come in with his nose to the ground. First rut activity I've seen. You don't need to be an expert to rattle one in. My son rattled one in for me when he was six years old. Buck came bombing in. Just be ready and don't overdue it like it was mentioned.
