Title: Successful 6x6 & 4x5 RIMROCK Elk Hunt
Post by: 338_Thumper on November 15, 2010, 11:10:56 AM
Hi Everyone,

Well it went REALLY GOOD !

First off I want to THANK EVERYONE who gave me information on RIMROCK !!!!

Well here is my story for the Forum. We got over there on Friday and setup camp in the Lost Lake Area - saw a bunch of cows and small bulls and lots of does. On Sunday at 2:00 we went to Conrad meadows behind the gate and just got to the second meadow and here was about a 360 Boone & Crockett Bull with 8 cows !! Oh how I wanted to Shoot ! We backed out and headed back to camp. I didn't get much sleep that night ! Well Monday we were up at 4:00 and headed to Conrad. We were there at first light but notice 2 sets of horse tracks - They must of went in after we left on Sunday and spooked them. Well we kept going (oh there was about 3" of snow too)and there is a old helo landing area - in the area was about 25 beds. I went up the hillside that had a lot of blowdown that goes up to the upper road - I spooked the cows and the big boy broke off the bunch so I started following him - I all of a sudden stepped into something mushy and looked down and it was almost a foot around of steaming elk *censored* ! I looked up and there he was sneaking ahead of me but I couldn't get a shot. I zigged and zagged back and forth up the hill till I hit the upper road - put out about 25 elk across the road but lost the big boy in all the tracks.

Well now it is 4:45 in the afternoon and in one of the lower fields is a 4x5 at 200 yards - He keeps looking into the timber so I watch him for 20 minutes - Well here comes a hunter walking the timbers edge and spooks him into the timber - GRRRR (oh Well that's Hunting).

Now it is Tuesday morning and we are walking in again - We get to the Helo Landing area and HOLY *censored* there they are at 200 yards up the meadow !! The Big Boy is just starting to go in the timber as I am getting the crosshairs on him - Just 2 more seconds and I would of had him - Well now there is another 6x6 a 5x5 a 4x5 and a spike with at least 35 cows there - I'm sitting down with my .338 magnum on cross sticks and my Buddy is also - The 6x6 is right in the middle of the cows so I can't get a shot - I shoot dime size groups at 200 yds. So I tell my buddy when he raises his head again I'm going to take him in the neck and for him to take one of the other bulls after I shoot. He then raises his head and boom down he goes and boom down goes the 4x5.

The first night going out after dark the bulls were still bulging and after dropping the 2 bulls the Big one circled above us and started bulging too ! Ohh how I wanted to go after him !! The cows that are not breed the first time go into a second heat about 4 weeks later and that's the only thing I can think why the bulls were still hanging with the cows and bulging.

Thank god it was flat in that area ! My buddy could only carry the front Quarters while lucky me had to carry the rest!
We had 50lbs.of tenderloins and back straps to eat off of the next 4 days we hung around camp. Pain pills and screwdrivers helped us to recuperate ! Oh and I want to thank whoever camped there before us built a custom *censored*ter 20 yards behind our camp wrapped around in black plastic with a toilet seat - Also we had 100' snags across from our camp that we cut down for our firewood ! We had a string of lights hung up that was hooked to my 600 watt generator to light up the camp at night - All the comforts of home !

Oh and the elk were definitely around our camp too ! They shot a spike on the road 50 yards below us and that afternoon they shot a 5x6 100 yards up the road on the road from our camp. The next day a guy shot at a 6x6 across from our camp 75 yards in the woods and killed the tree in front of it. HEHE

I'll get some pictures put up on the site when I figure out how to do it.

Again THANKS EVERYONE for the HELP !!!!!

Great area you were hunting up there I spent many years behind that gate with my bow, but there seemed to be allot of guys who couldnt read the no motor vehicle signs.  3 years in a row having quads drive up on me after hiking into the sawyer lakes above the meadows really turned me off on that area glad to see someone having success up there.

He uses a 300 Ultra mag. using 168 grain Berger Bullets - I use 225 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claw Bullets.

Thanks guys on the Congrats. I am still dreaming though of that 360 Bull - Just 2 seconds more .. That's hunting though always dreaming about the one that got away ! But like they say ... a bird in the hand is better than 2 in the bush..

Funny thing also happened - When we took the last pack out for the night a hour before dark (2) guys were there and one had a any bull tag - I told him to stay down by the corner of the meadow till dark to see if any of the other bulls we seen with the herd would come out - well 1/2 hour after we left the 5x5 comes out between the (2) bulls we took (they were about 50 yards apart) and he gets him with one shot. It was a nice 5x5 too. Also I was told a guy got a shot at the Big Boy too but missed him - So I haven't heard of anyone getting him.

Yeah I think I have dreamed at least a dozen times now of the Big Boy - Don't think that dream is gonna ever go away but that will definitely fire me up ever hunting season to come !

Has anyone heard of how anybody did in Little Natches (Peaches Ridge) - That was my first choice being I have hunted it for at least 25 years.

never did understand that quote. why is one bird in the hand so much better than having two birds in the bush? What bush are they speaking of? I like the bush as much as the next guy but not with birds in it. I am confused.
