Title: Ghillie Suits - Do you use them for yotes?
Post by: Wanttohuntmore on November 19, 2010, 09:44:48 AM: I'm toying with the idea of getting my 6 yr old a ghillie, and also one for me, for yote hunting this winter. Not sure if it's needed or not, as most yotes seem more alert with movement than color (from what I've experienced). But since my time in the woods is precious, I like to make every minute count!

Post by: Machias on November 19, 2010, 10:15:19 AM: I made one. Lots of fun, easy to do and works well. I used a pair of old camo pants and shirt. Shoe Goo 1" x 1" netting on and the tied dyed Jute twine on the netting. Very good and light weight. Easy to make. I also tied on a few pieces of burlap strips and camo strips. I don't wear it all the time, but love the stuff out in the sage brush.

Post by: Kain on November 19, 2010, 01:19:55 PM: I made my own set of "leafy" camo last year. Took an inexpensive set of camo and glued small pieces of polarfleece all over it with fabric glue. I noticed a big difference with deer right away. Even if they caught me moving they had no idea what I was. Its not ghillie but I can still shoot my bow with it. :chuckle: :chuckle:

I took and OD green vest and sew cammo netting to the back sides etc. And then took a boonie hat and dit the same thing leaving it long in the back and sides... I'll take a pic later... it works great and dosn't get hung up too bad...best of all it cost ZERO!

Big10 reminds me why I have passed on the idea before, getting hung up in the sage. Seems like I'm always getting hung up on something. I actually took some boat camo netting in the past, made a half@ss poncho to throw over me. Not bad, but still catches things when hiking through the brush.

My son and i both use them on every stand , now mind you i have not been doing this long so i might not know what works but i will not sit a stand without a Rancho safari ghillie we use the 3/4 coat allows you to walk without any hangups yet covers you to the waist , all you need when sitting on a stand . best money i ever spent they make a huge diffrence .

On my guided hunts i always offer one of my spares to my clients as well .

Post by: jeepasaurusrex on November 19, 2010, 11:41:35 PM: I still have mine from when I went through sniper school in the Army. The best place to get burlap is at a fabric store. You can buy it in 2" wide rolls so all you have to do is cut each piece off. I tied my netting to the back of the BDU top instead of shoe goo. I started at the bottom and worked my way up. You can buy the burlap in different colors. Green, dark brown, light brown, etc. I bought those 3 colors and worked my way up. When I was done I used a little black spray paint to blend some of the colors in. Next I put the suit in the washing machine. No soap. Just a quick cycle. Then, put it in the dryer and keep an eye on it. clean the lint trap constantly. This will help fray the ends and give it a more natural look. One thing to think about is some flame retardant spray. Them suits made from burlap will go up like a roman candle if you get a flame close.

I didn't think all the yarn clumps looked natural so i spent an hour or so breaking them apart. I guess the clumps are easier for the little Chinese kids to sew onto the garments. I like the hat, because the mesh hides my glasses without fogging the lenses like other face masks do. if i have a ways to walk to my stand i'll sling the bag over my shoulder and put it on when i get there. Only thing is, i wish they made leggings, because when i'm sitting,my lower legs are exposed. My old bones don't take to kneeling much any more. :(

Usually have gloves on too. This time, I think I'd forgotten them...

I said the hell with it and made one using a old flight suit. you can find everything to make one usually at a army navy surplus. get a flight suit for 20 buck used and then buy some burlap from walmart and have fun with it. you will amaze yourself what you can make. check out how to make one on you tube. if you choose to make your own be ready to put some time in drinking beer and sitting down. but like i said its well worth it and you will know how to fix and repair your OWN ghille suit. for snow check out the cold weather parka suits they have at cabelas.

Dont buy that one buddy. that one is crap. sportsman guide has the same one for sale and its horrible.

Post by: drysideshooter on November 28, 2010, 02:21:43 PM: I have had one of the sapper suits from APC for a while, and use it a fair amount. They do pick up sticks, twigs and brush a lot, as any ghillie of that style will tend to do. The desert/sage/grasslands camo works really well for eastern WA and Or though. I have been able to set in the middle of a pretty open area with my call a ways away and have animals come into the open.

For some areas I think a ghillie is pretty ideal as it will break up your outline a lot without having to have other cover behind you or close by. In areas where it's too big of a pain because of snagging and such, one of the other style of ghillies with the fluffy shards of cloth stips work pretty well and don't pick up as much vegetation.

One thing you will notice when your ghillie arrives is that it will have a very strong textile smell to it. Hang it outside for several days, and then put it in a bag with some sage for a while.

You don't need a ghillie everywhere, but there are areas where they are a really good choice.

It was used over other clothing, and rolled into a tidy little cylinder when not in use. I am looking into buying one, perhaps along with ghillie gaiters.

Post by: Jerry malbeck on November 28, 2010, 08:35:55 PM: Trust me guys after buying several cheaper ghillies and a couple of more expensive ghillies ill tell you straight up you cannot get a better ghillie for calling coyotes the a rancho safari. they are light, breath well enough to even wear in the summer, and will not smell funny ,catch fire, or get caught up on everything in sight including your guns action :chuckle:. they are the best out there

This is not the case if you get the rancho safari suit. They are top notch quality. More expensive but well worth it if you don't have the time or inclination to make your own.

Post by: AWS on November 30, 2010, 06:56:23 AM: I have one that has 600 sq in of Hunter Orange strips sewn in mostly in the back and a few strips in the front to be able to hunt preds during modern deer season. I leave the front open with an orang shirt underneath and an orange hat. When I get to a stand I pull the hood over the hat and zip up the front, all ready to call and still meet the letter of the law.

I've tried one over here on the wet side but they get so heavy when wet and take a long time to dry that it stays in the closet most of the time.

For hunting on the eastside most of the places I hunt have pretty heavy cover and haven't ever seen the need for a gillie, Natgear and keeping still seems to work for me plus I use a remote caller and decoy alot and that takes the focus off of me.

I have two one in jerryflage and one in four seasons. if i were to only own one it would be the jerryflage. no not named after me , the owner of rancho safari is named jerry . :chuckle:
this shaggie is awsome you never get hung up on anything and you dont even have to take it off when you get into your rig to relocate .

He suggested dragging it in the dirt and shaking it out, to get the right, local look. (That probably beats waiting for a Friday night's crawl home. :chuckle:)

I used mine in a game of paintball once (bad idea, the smell from paintballs seems to never go away). I had a guy (adult) from the opposing team walk within 10 feet of me. I came out of the shadows and yelled "surrender or die" and he actually screamed! I nearly fell over laughing.

They are pretty fun.
