Title: Best turkey practice
Post by: Gobble Doc on November 20, 2010, 06:35:36 PM
My son will be trying to get his first bird.  Let's assume that he is unable to get a shot at a tom but there are several hens.  Should he be going for a hen that isn't the largest one this time of year?  Is it important to try to leave the boss hen with the flock during the winter?  What is the best thing to do?

If they are walking toward you or by you, the older hen who determines where the flock goes will be in the lead.  If you have to shoot a hen....do not shoot her.  She is generally an adult and a proven producer.  Look for a tom or more likely a jake in with the group...usually toward the middle or rear.
