Title: Speaking of the northwest T/C
Post by: dawhunt on November 29, 2010, 06:24:33 PM: Had a customer today who is having fireing proplems (won't fire most times ?) says it miss fires when he just squeezes the trigger but fires when he jerks the trigger he's useing CCI #11 magnum caps ???
says when there's nothing in the barrel and he fires a cap it blows right out the end of the barrel but when its loaded it missfires almost all the time ????????? I've never heard that about this gun has anyone else had this proplem and what did you do.

I told him tor try RWS caps or the Remington caps and see if that fixes the proplem didn't know what else to try. :dunno: :dunno:

In 25 yrs of muzzleloading I've had a few very few missfires nothing like he's having.
The kid needs some help here guys.

Post by: Chinook73 on November 29, 2010, 08:32:23 PM: I had an issue with the #11 nipples myself. I purchased some #11 nipples at Cabelas made by Mountain Supply Manufacturing (I think that is the company name). Problem solved.

Strange that it would fire a cap every time with no load down the tube. Like Chinook73 said, the nipple would be the place to start. I switched to T7 this year and have had no problem with it and CCI #11's in my Bighorn.

I actually had two caps not fire the other day. Had a blacktail at 10 yards. :bash: The deer moved off to 40 yards but stopped and let me try one more time and luckily the third cap went off. I have no idea why the caps didn't go off. This was with a Lyman Deerstalker and RWS #11 caps. I've never had a cap not fire.

I really don't see whats causing his proplem unless he's got a plugged nipple(ouch) if it fires when he jerks the trigger but not when he squeeses it ??? could be the spring ??? but its a brand new gun.

It fires when he's just shooting the nipple with nothing in the barrel then it should fire when loaded, I'm really confused here the gun should shoot ????????????

I told him to contact T/C didn't know what else to tell him after suggesting trying differant caps.

So you're saying it's common for caps to fail to fire? As I said it's never happened to me and I've been shooting muzzleloaders for about 25 years. Then I get two in a row ??? I've mad "misfires" many times, when the cap went off but didn't ignite the powder. Just never had a cap not work.

I was having trouble a couple yrs ago with the cap not firing but it was because the cap wasn't going on all the way the caps were CCI caps,I bought some RWS cap and haven't had the proplem since,the CCI's were just to tight to go on all the way,thats why I don't use CCI anymore and that was the first question I asked him what caps are you using ???

I had used CCI's for yrs and that was the first time that happened the gun always fired on the second shot after the cap had been driven on all the way by the first shot.

The RWS cap and the Remington caps are much hotter also.

If I understood the kid right his caps wouldn't go off but would if the gun wasn't loaded ??? or if he jerked the trigger instead of squeesing it , which doesn't make any sense to me at all ???I told him to post his question on here he said he was a member here.

So to recap the problem I'm having(no pun intended), the gun will only fire consistently when not loaded. I can cap it to clean the nipple and it fires every time. When it is loaded it takes several tries to fire off the cap unless I jerk the trigger. This makes no sense to me. The hammer should strike the firing pin with the same force no matter if the trigger is squeezed or jerked, but this seems to not be the case here. The load is 100gr T7 295gr. powerbelt cci#11 mag caps.

If anyone has any ideas, send them my way.

It's my buddys gun so I think I'll pass it off to him and let him deal with it now. I own a TC Black Diamond XR, been shooting that since 02 I think, never had a missfire, not one. Always used CCI #11's and switched to RWS musket caps this year.

A question for anyone who owns the northwest explorer, can musket caps be used? And what about pellets?

Post by: Chinook73 on December 02, 2010, 04:24:50 PM: I have used both pellets and musket caps in my Explorer. FYI, do not try to use the T/C hotshot nipples (#11 or Musket) in that gun. They are simply too long to close the breech. If you try to force the breech closed when it is capped with those nipples, it will smash the cap and it could go off. I currently use two 50grn. Pyrodex pellets with a #11 cci magnum cap Hornady 300grn. SST saboted bullet and it shoots around 2" groups at 100yds on a simple rest open sights. I am sure that it would shoot a lot tighter if I put it in a lead sled. There has been plenty of trash talk about this gun, but it works well for me.

I took it apart to clean it and found a part of the #11 cap jambed around the bottom of the nipple.Maybe snapping off a cap prior to loading it got caught.Might be someting to look at.

Post by: tbotts on December 02, 2010, 07:32:24 PM: Are you trying to ignite 100gr of loose t7 or 100gr of t7 pellets? Pellets are very hard to ignite using #11 caps.
