Well no tag soup for me this year! I have no problem with a little tag soup and sometimes enjoy it :chuckle: I have passed a lot of nice bucks this year. But that 180.00 multi tag was burning a hole in my pocket. I have seen some great bucks, and some monsters during this late season. I was able to Harvest this nice bench leg yesterday. He is a 4x4 with just the one eye guard on his right side. so 5x4, he is right at 17.5" wide. Now for the story.
Late yesterday afternoon, i was drag in butt getting my chores done. Trying to get stuff taken care of, so i could make it out for a evening hunt. I just about bagged on it because it was late enough in the day. But i decided to head over and get a little more hunting in. I got over to our ranch and parked by our barn and headed out. I got to a fork were we can go left or right. Well i decided to take the left fork, and go down into the canyon we call the odd tower. I was creepin along the side of the canyon. walking in the edge of the oaks. I had just statred to think to myself, why haven't i seen a deer yet. I took about 5 more steps, and looked along the edge of the oaks in-front of me. Up stands two does, out of there beds. All i could do is freeze, and think dang! i just messed up. These does were right on the edge of the spot i wanted to get to. So i could glass the canyon in-front of me. As i sat there froze solid with my smoke pole on my shoulder, and my shooting sticks in my hand. I started to See movement in the oaks behind them. Then out walks this buck. Lucky for me he has some doe poon on his mind. Most the bucks have not been messing with the does. But lucky for me, he was not one of those bucks. He came out from the edge on the oaks and chased one of the does in a semi circle. Distracting the does for a few seconds. I was able to slide my muzzle loader from my shoulder and get it into my hand. The other doe looks back at me and i just freeze again and start a stair down with her. Why the buck plays with the other doe. Then the doe he is messing with darts into the oaks and he follows. Everything in my mind, told me to throw up and shoot before he gets to the oaks. Well i decided not to rush it and held off. As i watched him sleek into the oaks i thought i had blown my chance at him. As i am about to loose sight of him. He stops and cocks his head back and looks back up at the other doe. That is still standing there looking at me/in my direction and feeding a little. He then does a 180deg turn and starts heading back up to check her out, for some reason. I could not believe me luck! As he walks out to her. She turns a little to watch him. As she turns, i spread my shooting sticks open and bring my gun up. I guessed them about 100 yards away. She starts to cut to the left down towards the oaks. He drops right behind her and follows suit. I flip my safety off and mouth bleat at him to stop him. When he stops, he is kinda at a quarter away. His head was to to left. So i was faced with a decision. Try to let him walk again and stop him again or take the shot. I was pretty dang solid with my standing sticks. And i settled the front pin of my truglo glode on his back ribs. As I squeezed the trigger, it seems like everything around me got real loud. The wind and noise of the oak leaves blowing in the wind. When the cap goes off the smoke rolls out of my gun. For the first time ever with my muzzleloader all i can see is smoke as the wind is blowing right in my face. Most times the smoke has not ever blocked my view of the shot. But this time i got it bad. I heard the bullet smack him, and as my eyes burned from the smoke. I stepped to the side and see him on the ground. He was on his side and then rolled and took about 2 rolls before getting hung up and coming to a stop. I grabbed my quick shot and got all loaded back up, just in case. As I walked/ran "best i could" over to him i could see it was lights out for him. After getting to him, i ranged back to the area i was standing and it was right at 106yards. Well now the fun part. I was down over the edge a bit and all alone. My wife's rig is broke down and has no rig to come over and help me. So i say heck with it and decide to play superman. "DUMB MOVE" and drag him up the hill, after i had gutted him. I did not have far to go. About 150 yards to a spot i knew i could get my truck to. For those who do not know me, i have a bone disorder and have had several ankle surgeries. lucky i had my good braces on. Well after about 45 Min's of fighting with him. I got him up to the spot. Sore as heck i walk back and get my truck. I was able to get my truck on a knob and get the tailgate closer to the ground. Now this buck is no monster when it comes to body size. But plenty big enough! After a pretty good fight, i was able to load him in the back of the truck. I called my wife and had her meet me at our shop and help me out. I was not much in the mood or even thinking about pictures. I got a decent picture for everyone to see a pic of him and went to work. I am going to work on the horns today, and i will take some more pics of the horns. All and all i had a great great deer hunting. I passed a lot of deer with bow and rifle to be able to hunt the late muzzle season. I was rewarded With a very nice bench leg buck. Thanks to everyone for taking the time to read me story.
*I did try to take my time with this right up, and use a few periods and capitol letters. ;)
