Man what a great trip. I got to see a ton of deer. Meet some great people. Plus I got to shoot the biggest deer I've ever shot.

Okay so here it goes. We arrived around noon Wed. Got our gear put away and headed out to do some scouting. We ended up seeing 49 deer 14 turkeys and 1 coyote. Pretty good for only half a day of scouting. We hunted the next couple of days without seeing a buck we wanted to go after. Friday night we all met up at Antlers for dinner and a few drinks. The following morning we headed to an area we hadn't been to yet. It was snowing pretty hard at that time and only getting deeper as we went up. Not to mention that you couldn't see very well. When we got to the top we decided that we would head back down and see if we could find something a little different. On our way back down the hill we spotted some animals here and there but they where all does. After a while the snow started fading away and eventually stopped. We where just about out of the area when we spotted some deer up on the hill. We glassed for a little while and spotted a decent 4x4 that my buddy wanted to try and get. The only problem was it was behind some private property. So we drove down the road to find the farmer who owned it. When we stopped to talk to them we found out the person we needed to talk to wasn't home. So we went and hunted a different area. Not finding any deer we wanted we decided to go back and see if he was home. We where told we had just missed him. So we went up the road to see if the deer where still in the area. On our way up we ran into the farmer. He was the nicest guy a person could ever hope to meet. I gave us permission to cross his property to the buck. We went up the hill and found the buck was still there. We made a plan and we where off. My buddy was going to belly crawl down an old road grade to a good shooting position. Then my cousin and I where going to split up and walk up the hill to the deer. Our plan was working out perfectly except for one small problem. My buddy couldn't quite get to where he wanted to be cause of some does we hadn't seen. Mean while we pushed them up and they went right where we thought they would. Well when he was finally presented with a shot he pulled up his gun and realized that the appearature (sp) for his peep site was missing. So he centered up the front bead and shot. We watched from below as the whole heard of deer moved up and over the hill. Including the buck he was after. :bash: Clean miss. We looked all over and found no blood in the snow. The next morning we decide to try a new area. After not seeing a single deer and almost getting stuck we decided to head back and see if the buck from the night before had come back. As we where driving in we spotted the farmer driving his tractor down a different road. We got to where we had spotted the deer before and started glassing. Not five minutes later the farmer drives up to see what was going on. He then asked if we had seen the buck down the road. We hadn't so we drove down to take a look at him. We both decided that he was a buck we would both shoot. So we put some super secret moves on him and got close enough for a shot. I decided that I would let my buddy shoot first. After he shot the deer ran towards us and stopped. Then started working his way back up the hill. At this point I had figured that he had missed again. So I decided to take a shot. When i shot he just hit the dirt. buck down. Upon closer inspection we found that he had missed again and only had one bullet hole in him. After a quick photo session and cleaning we drug him back to the truck and took him to the farmers house. Where he used his tractor to hoist him up so I could skin him out. If it wasn't for that kind hearted man I'm not sure if I would of been able to harvest such a fine animal. Thanks again if your out there. Now the story continues but I will have to let my buddy tell the rest of it....

Sounds like you owe a certain farmer a bottle. Nice job all around.

So we put some super secret moves on him and got close enough for a shot.
I love it!
Congrats on the nice buck. Good to hear of the nice farmer as well.

I will say the farmer was a god send. He was one of the best people I have ever met and his wife as well. You don't run into many people who open there home and land to some one they have just met. It does show that god works in mysterious ways. If your out there and reading this thankyou once again.

Actually he told us he doesn't drink hard stuff any more. I did how ever give him my havalon knife it just bought. Plus we came back after a day or so and helped him out around his place. He had some welding he needed to get done. So I did that while the other guys helped him out with some other chores. Like feeding the cows, fixing one of the water troth's. We even helped him help his son load his dodge pickup onto a flat bed trailer so he could take it in to get fixed. Definitely a true gentleman.

It goes to show that it doesn't have to be the biggest buck on the mountain to be a GREAT trophy.
