WTF is that :yike:

Where's Gutpile, he will identify that nasty thing. I would call it squished.
-
Nasty buggers :yike: lookin at that thing makes my skin crawl :yike:

Must be some Iraqi sand spider thing with a big mouth! Seriously, what is that?!

Camel spider
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camel_spider (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camel_spider)
this is a very large one don't be fooled by all the stories of them being as big as peoples hands. until you see a picture with someone holding one in their palm don't believe them
-
so, are you in Iraq now? Or was that thing under your pillow in Tacoma? I'm not going to bed until you tell me! :chuckle:
-
These are very common in Iraq. This is by far the biggest one I have seen I will get a good measurement when I put him in acrylic.

Thats why I keep a handgun under the mattress :o
-
We have those at my work. It is the only place I have seen them around here.
-
I can tell you that in Oman they are much bigger. Bodies (not measuring the legs 8".. I was there many years ago, not sure I have pics but they are bigger than the ones I saw in Iraq (AL ASaad).
-
It is pretty cool looking however I would not want to share my bed with it...
so do you collect bugs? I used to have a scorpion and a few other acrylic coated bugs.....
-
Dinner Time
I dont know if I would like to see a 8in bodied camel spider :yike: :yike: :yike:
I dont really collect bugs, but I want to keep this thing. Just have to get him in acrylic so I can clear customs
-
that is cool
....wow....
the other fascinating one is the bird eating spiders from the tropics....
-
In Oman we put a black scorpion in with a camel spider... camel spider won... amazing.
-
I haven't found any scorpions on Balad. Maybe we will find another camel spider or at least something that can fight back I have a video of the lizard, but its 87mg working on compressing.
-
i m not much of a spider phobe, but that sumbich would get blasted on sight. anything with more hair on its legs then me should be hunted.
-
I friggin hate spiders, makes me nauseous just looking at your pictures. Man that thing is nasty looking.
-
Ugly. We had these (huntsman spider) in our house in Australia. They came out at night and could be found stuck to the side of the walls. Quite a shock when you are going to the bathroom at 2AM. Almost makes you :pee: They are harmless though, just big.
-

Looks like one of those Camel Spiders in Iraq
-
Guess I was late, someone already ID'd it. LOL.
-
There would be .45 cal. holes all over my bed....and I'd be deaf from my own girlish screams.
-
I keep clicking on this, and every time my skin crawls :chuckle: that one with the lizard is pretty sweet.
-
The ones here at my work in Moses Lake are at biggest 1.75 or 2 inches. Our plant is the only place I have seen them. Are they native to Washington or did these hitch a ride from somewhere on our raw materials? Just something I have always wondered. We have done the same thing, put them in a glass enclosure and have gladiator battles. They make short work of black widows, ants and other insects, but have no chance against a Mantis.

ok so thats probably the sort of thing that would get peta up your ass in a hurry but bug battles are frickin awesome.... Mantis are pretty tough predators ....bugs are way cool so long as it isnt a flea tick mosquito or mite :chuckle:
-
Overnight this is what is left of the Lizzard Weird looking almost looks melted
-
Man that is nasty!
-
Marine eats camel spider (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Nd3Tz_9ENU#)
Eat it.
-
We had those in saudi, they are not true spiders (notice the legs they have more than eight, I believe ten). The snakes there was the thing that made me squirm, horned vipers that chase you and come out from under your tent plat forms. We killed quite a few of those buggers.
-
Dinner #2
Very Large Locus
-
35 min later
-
I would scream like a girl :yike:
I
Me too, plus the earthquake recording machines would find an epicenter where my foot stomped that critter into paste! YIKS!!!!!!!!!
-
Well it died and here it is in the begining stage of acrylic.
-
is that even a spider i see what looks like 10 legs :dunno:
-
its more related to a scorpion
-
:puke: :puke: Why did it died :dunno: must be the tasty dinners :chuckle:
-
I used to catch the camel spider and scorpions and watch the scorpions sting them to death. I hate those things, it is probably the one thing I can say I don't miss about the sand box. I'd rather be getting shot at again or convoying through an IED hot spot than deal with those things again. There related to the scorpion and not a spider but non the less I hate spiders and anything that looks like them.
A big one is only about 4 to 5 inches leg tip to leg tip. Not very big but they can run fast but not as fast as me as I have prov en it more than once.
Why did I even open this thread now I'm in the mood to smash one.
-
Good lord, that makes my skin crawl..... I hate spiders & that thing right there.... :yike: :mgun:
-
Those last pics look muuuuch better, nice and dead ;)
I'd never heard of these things until today, NASTY
-
Splat, or it might be crunch. That's all I can say.
-
They only live 1 year.. This ones body is 2 3/16in long. Temps are dipping into the 30's at night says they need to be 78-95 so it only a matter of time. I got 4 good videeos of him eating and some cool pics. All in all it was a good venture and now I can take it home and show everyone what was crawling around. They do run 10MPH on the ground we used a little teamwork to catch this one. I would hate to run into the species that gets 8in bodies. There are 900 species of them 24 live in the US deserts.
-
Wind scorpions! At least that is what they called them in Wyoming. Looked just like that sucker, I've only seen one in WA - yes, I smashed it into goo, they give me heebie-jeebies!
Speaking of screaming like a girl, 20 years ago on Rarotonga I was showering when a centipede came out of the drain - about 7" long, 5/8" wide, 1/2 inch pincers - beat it to pudding while naked with a swim fin.
-
Ok, I have to step in here as an amature 'buggist', and a big fan of Solifugae, which is what these are. They are not really spiders, but have eight legs like spiders, and two elongated pedipalpe, which look like the front two legs, but are really more like 'feelers'. They are extreemly fast, and can jump fairly high for their size. The chelicerae, or mandables, operate independantly, and have one of the highest jaw strengths of any critter. They will attack, kill, and eat things many times their size. No stinger, do not attack humans, though people have thought they were because they will run along side of a human to stay in their shadow during the day. They are desert critters and vary in size up to about 10mm. They are so deadly cool! If you want more info, go here. http://www.solpugid.com/index.htm (http://www.solpugid.com/index.htm)

Thanks for the info. Good to hear that they don't bite humans.
-
I should clarify, they WILL bite if threatened, same as any other critter. I guess what I find so amazing about them is they are so basic 'kill and eat' critters, and are so good at it. If they were six feet long I think humans and just about every other critter would be in big trouble.

Perhaps...
I tend to think we'd have a new trophy species to hunt....and or eradicate
I was totally cool with these things living in Iraqi deserts... now its getting closer to home, no please
-
They have been E-Wa, but you rarely see them. Same as real scorpions are there as well, but you don't see them either.
-
just keep them away from hanford.
